Research themes on
Environment & Health
Action Plan
 Integrating and exploiting research results for policy
development (Action 5)
 Analysis of environment/health interactions to improve
understanding & prevention of the priority diseases (putting
emphasis on children, e.g. asthma, allergy, neuro-immune
disorders, cancers, endocrine disruption) (Action 6)
 Developing methodologies to assess better the risks coming from
environmental factors and improving economic valuation
(externalities concept) and impact analyses of prevention
strategies (Action 7)
 Launching research on emerging issues (Action 8)
– climate change & health (e.g. spreading of emerging diseases)
Slide 2pathogens in drinking water)
– water pollution (e.g. emerging
Synthesizing research
results for supporting
Human Biomonitoring
 Scientific Workshop, 21 November 2005,
Brussels
aims to :
 explore the contribution of EU-funded
research from FP5 and FP6 to human
biomonitoring
 overview of existing European cohorts
 pilot studies to validate study protocols
 development of biomarkers
 harmonising population-based biobanks
Slide 3
Synthesizing research
results for supporting
Human Biomonitoring
 enhance the integration of research
activities and policy initiatives (e.g. ESBIO
project)
 present new research approaches for
integrated assessment of health risks from
environmental stressors by using
environmental monitoring, biomonitoring and
health surveillance information (eg.
INTARESE Integrated Project)

6. Environment
(inc. climate change)
Climate change, pollution and risks
• Pressures on environment and climate
• Environment and health
• Natural hazards
Sustainable Management of Resources
• Conservation and sustainable management of natural and man-made resources
• Evolution of marine environments
Environmental Technologies
• Environmental technologies for observation, prevention, mitigation, adaptation,
remediation and restoration of the natural and man-made environment
• Technology assessment, verification and testing
Earth observation and assessment tools
• Earth observation
• Forecasting methods and assessment tools
Specific Programme
“Co-operation”
 Theme 6. Environment (including Climate Change)
 Human biomonitoring is included under the Environment & Health
topic
“Research will aim at integrating research activities on human
biomonitoring regarding scientific aspects, methodologies and
tools to develop a coordinated and coherent approach. It will
include European cohort studies,… and methods & tools for
improved risk characterization, assessment… Research will
develop biomarkers and modeling tools taking into account
combined exposures…”
 Implementation through Collaborative Research Projects/NoE/CA
Slide 7
Cooperation – Collaborative research
• Under each theme there will be sufficient flexibility to
address
both Emerging needs and Unforeseen policy needs
• Dissemination of knowledge and transfer of results will be
supported in all thematic areas
• Support will be implemented across all themes through:
Collaborative research
(Collaborative projects; Networks of Excellence; Coordination/support actions)
Joint Technology Initiatives
Coordination of non-Community research programmes
(ERA-NET; ERA-NET+; Article 169)
International Cooperation
Slide 8
Specific Programme
“Co-operation”
 Elements of Article 169
 Essential element is the integration of national
research programmes into a joint programme
 It has to be demonstrated that Article 169 is the
most appropriate instrument to achieve the goals
 The national research programmes concerned shall be
of a significant size in terms of budget and manpower
(financial integration)
 The topic should be important from a scientific point
of view and of major interest for the Community as a
whole
