Introducing the VISION 2020UK App Tank
How did we manage our lives before we had
smartphones and apps? Today, people are using
apps for an ever increasing range of tasks from social
networking, news and weather reports to book
reading, travel planning and gift buying.
Apps are becoming very popular with blind and
partially sighted people, and nowadays, many new
Internet users are having their first online experience
with a smartphone or tablet instead of a more
traditional computer. Many new users tell us that this
is a more accessible and less daunting route.
The world of apps has even more to offer blind and
partially sighted people. As well as all the
aforementioned uses, many blind and partially
sighted people are also using apps to boost their
independence and mobility. Modern smartphone
camera and sensor technology is making many
things possible from OCR scanning to colour
identification. The potential is just enormous!
As a response to the phenomenal growth in the use of
smartphones and tablets, we've created the App Tank,
and we'd love to hear from you with suggestions of apps
that you'd like to see included.
All of the apps in the App Tank have been recommended
to us by blind and partially sighted people who've told us
that they find them easy to use with a screen reader or
magnification.
Most of the apps included so far are for for iOS, thats the
iPhone and iPad operating system, simply because this is
currently the most popular platform among blind and
partially sighted smartphone users. But we'd love to hear
from you with suggestions for Android and other
platforms.
So if you'd like to tell us about an app that you enjoy
using then drop us an email and we will add it to the tank!
