CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

TURKEY

November 2012
Climate change is a development issue, and
only sustainable development can confront
the challenge...
• Unsustainable development, in the past and the
present, is the root cause of climate change.
• Sustainable development is certainly a necessary,
and probably a sufficient, condition for overcoming
this challenge. Simply ‘adding on’ mitigative and
adaptive strategies to unsustainable development
will not work.
3 PILLARS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
ADAPTATION
POLICY
• The efficient use of current policies in the context of climate change
adaptation
• The development of new policies and strategies
SCIENCE
• Establishing tools that support adaptation efforts by using the best available
technology and data
• Making information available at all levels of the community
IMPLEMENTATION
• Realizing adaptation implementation from local to central at varying scales
and levels
• Monitoring and evaluating processes from the economic, social and
environmental aspects

actions:
PROJECTIONS OF TURKEY
PRECIPITATION
SURFACE RUNOFF
TEMPERATURE
• Almost all simulations agree on ;
• -Temperature increase in Turkey in the twenty
first century. They also indicate
• larger increases towards interior and eastern
parts of Turkey.
• -Precipitation reduction in winter in the
Mediterranean, increase Black Sea region. Reduction of spring runoff and an increase of
winter runoff in the eastern Anatolia.
