Climate change
Typical higher exam question: (4 Marks)
For a named developing country, explain why
climate change is likely to have a large impact
on its people.
What are the
triggers in this
question?
Climate change is likely to have a large impact on the
people of Egypt for several reasons. The river Nile
flows through Egypt and several other countries. As
countries further upstream become warmer and drier
because of increased temperatures, they will desire
more water. This therefore means that Egypt, who is on
the lower course of the river could suffer by having less
fresh water available as it has a restricted flow due to
dams. As climate is getting warmer, natural disasters
such as flooding and hurricanes are becoming more
frequent. Cairo, which houses many people, sits on the
Delta which is low lying and if sea levels rise then much
of the coastline could be flooded.
