20th Century Music
1900-1999
The early Twentieth century was a
time of self expression in art and
music
Impressionism, Expressionism, and
Nonobjectivism
Impressionism in Art
An art style that tried to show the
natural effects of sunlight on
objects.
Up close, the artwork looked like
random brush strokes but from a
distance, the strokes came
together to form beautiful pictures.
Soliel levant
Claude Monet
Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the
Grand-Jatte (1884-1886) by Georges Seurat

Impressionism in Music
French composers experimented
with this technique to blend tones
to create new harmonic forms and
structures.
One of the lead composers of this
technique was Claude Debussy.
His work served as the model for
many composers in the early
decades of the 20th century
Claude Debussy
1732-1809
•One
of the most
important music figures
at the beginning of the
20th cent
•Grew up in the Romantic
era but wanted his own
sound
•Compositions were free
from standard form and
explored new harmonies,
timbres, textures, and
moods
Listening to and Analyzing
Impressionistic Music
“The Sunken Cathedral” from Preludes Book 1, Claude Debussy (CD 12)
Listen to the piece and look at the picture. Identify
Musical and Visual Characteristics
1.

Expressionism in Art
Art form that focused on raw

World War I and were nightmarish,
tense, and angry.
The Scream
Edvard Munch
1893
Expressionism in Music
Musical style that subjectively
explored deep inner feelings.
Composers used dissonance to
create tension

Expressionistic Music
““Death Scene from Wozzeck” (Act III, Scene 2)-Alban Berg CD13
What sort of imagery is put into your
mind when you hear this piece?
How do you think Alban Berg made
this effect?
Non Objectivism in Art
Art form where the subject matter
is abandoned completely
Harmony Squares with Concentric Rings
Wassily Kadinsky
1913
Non Objectivism in Music
12-Tone Music
Developed by Arnold Shoenberg
that emphasized form and
structure instead of melody
Tone Row
Series of notes compirsing the 12
pitches of the chromatic scale. The
notes in a tone row could follow
any order as long as all 12 tones
were used before any one was
repeated.
An entire musical work would be
comprised of the original tone row
and manipulations of it
Manipulations of Tone Row
The 3 Chief ways to manipulate
Tone Row:
1. Retrograde-the notes of the tone
row appeared in reverse
2. Inversion-the notes were turned
upside down or inverted
3. Retrograde Inversion-the notes
were played upside down and in
reverse
Listening to and Analyzing
NonObjective Music
“Minuet” from Suite for Piano, Op. 25 by Arnold Schoenberg
Listen to the music and see if you can
detect the tone row and when it is
manipulated.

American Avante Garde
Charles Ives- composed works that

different melodies?
Aleatory Music
Music in which composers
deliberately leave parts of the
composition and performance
undetermined and at the discretion
of the performers

with exotic textures and timbres
“The Rats” from Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Pied Piper
