Numbers are everywhere!
We cannot escape this! Let’s take this table, what does it show?
What does this one show?
It shows West Ham
are not doing very
well!
Football stats/ rugby
Euro 2016 - Stats
How many of you have got a
new phone recently?
The world of binary…
Where did numbers come from?
Roman numerals were used previously but there was no 0 in this system
Around 1500 years ago, in the 6th Century the modern system of numbers was
invented in India. 500-600AD
This included the numbers 0-9…
Having 0 in sums makes it far easier to do calculations…This was the problem
with the roman system
What’s the point in me learning
maths?
Humans are naturally curios, we want to solve problems! Whether you think it or not; it is
true!
When you solve a problem it makes you feel good about yourself, you increase your self
esteem!
Maths develops:
Logical reasoning
Our abstract thinking
Problem solving skills
When will I ever use this when I leave school?
You have all said this at one time or another…whether it’s about:
-
Trigonometry
Pythagoras
Expanding brackets
Factorising quadratics
Solving simultaneous equations
BUT IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING…IT IS ABOUT THE SKILLS YOU
ARE LEARNING TOO!
In order to solve these problems you must demonstrate:
- Logical reasoning
- Problem solving skills
- The ability to think in an abstract way
So what are we doing in school?
You will have noticed the GM and problem solving challenge taking place every week.
Every week there will be a different challenge.
These are designed to develop your mathematical thinking – ESPECIALLY
- Problem solving
- Logical thinking and
- Abstract thinking
Here’s the leaderboard at the moment…
The leaderboard by form…
DI4 – First
Ap5 – Second
Di11a – Third
All we want to see is you having a go at the tasks…
Give them a go, make mistakes and learn from them
IT WILL HELP YOUR MATHEMATICAL THINKING!
The leaderboard by college...
Remember maths is everywhere
- DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GET IF
WRONG
- IF YOU ARE TRYING, YOU ARE
SUCCEEDING.
What’s the point in me learning maths?
We’re not going to tell you what will happen if you have poor
numeracy skills. Let’s focus on what happens if you have good
numeracy skills:
1) You will achieve above a stage 6 in your GCSEs
2) You will be more likely to have a better job (higher paid)
3) You will be able to save money and be more efficient with it
– mortgages and rent
4) You will be better with problem solving
5) You are more than twice as likely to be employed than those
with poor numeracy skills
Numeracy is….
Power
Success
