Global Climate Change and the Jetstream
Do Now: Post Activity Discussion
1. What is the Jetstream and what does it separate?
• It is a fast moving, upper-level wind (in the Stratosphere)
• It separates cold air from the north and warm air from the south
2. Why is the Jetstream important?
• It is the most important factor for our daily weather
• It carries and mixes our air masses creating the weather and severe weather
3. How has the Jetstream changed?
• Loss of Arctic ice and a warmer Arctic have slowed (it can stop over regions) and weakened
(can be pushed out of the way by stronger air masses such as an Arctic air mass)
4. What is causing the Jetstream to change?
• Global Warming/Global Climate Change
5. What will be future impact of these changes?
• More extreme weather for longer periods of time, more severe storms, droughts and floods
