Everything you need to know to
get started
Halifax All-City String Program
•

•
Consists of 2 classes/week (violin or cello)
Grade 4 to 6 at your school
Grade 7-9 school ensemble+class (2 classes/week)
String students can audition for All City groups
including orchestras, Honour Violin, FiddleFax,
Choirs and Jazz Groups
Grade 10-12
• Is taught outside the regular school program
but:
• Can still count as your fine arts credit, required
for High School Graduation in Nova Scotia

A Parent/Guardian’s Role
• Set a practice schedule
• Support your child’s music education through:
Help with problem solving
Listening to them practice
Attending concerts
Encouraging and praising
Communicating with staff
• Encouraging a long term commitment to the
program

Where Do We Begin?
Cost
• Parents provide instrument (rental or purchase)
and method book.
• Classes are free
• Incidental expenses include rosin, strings, music
stand, tuner, shoulder rest or floor anchor
• Financial assistance is available on a case by case
basis should you need. Please contact the
teacher.

Buying a string instrument
• Please consult string teacher before purchasing
an instrument.
• Correct sizing for your child is essential.
• Quality instruments are easier to play, and are a
better investment.
• Better sounding instruments sustain student
interest.
An alternative to purchase
• Halifax Music Centre has good quality string
instruments in many sizes available for rental at
modest cost. However, we do not have enough to
accommodate all students.
Rental Office
• Cost is $120.00 for school year.
• Insurance (add a rider to household / tenants’
insurance)
