Stem The Tide of Climate Change
Introduction
Climate change is happening everywhere. It is having a drastic
impact on different countries all over the world.
We need to protect the earth, it has been given to us as a gift
from god and we need to protect it as best we can.
The earth belongs to the lord. And
So does everything in it.
The world belongs to him. And so
do all those who live in it.

Find out about climate change…
Our planet is changing all the time, and with this
the climate is too. Temperatures are increasing,
water levels are rising and the ice-caps and
glaciers are melting. Scientists have said that this
is caused by the increase in the amount of CO2
emissions that are being released into the earth’s
atmosphere. Almost 26 billion tonnes of CO2 are
released globally each year. CO2 can stay in the
atmosphere for up to 200 years, heating up the
planet. Most of these emissions are coming from
transport, heating and electricity generation. One
of the main factors of the increase in CO2 levels
is that many people are using a huge amount of
fossil fuels.

What does it all mean?…
Climate change: This term refers to an increase in the
Earth’s temperature. Scientists think that it is caused by
things that people do.
Carbon emissions: When people burn fossil fuels
like coal, oil and gas to create electricity and to run
cars. This lets off carbon dioxide which is one of the
main causes of greenhouse gases.
Carbon dioxide: A colourless gas that is a natural part
of the earth’s atmosphere however the level that it is
rising at is the main cause of global warming.

What are the churches in the Pacific Islands
saying?…
The members of the Pacific Conference of Churches,
met at Kanana Fou Theological College in American
Samoa from the 3rd - 9th of September 2007. They
are aware of the effects of climate change on their
land and sea. They have said that their land and sea
are their gifts from God and as it is part of God’s
creation, it is their duty to be stewards of this gift.
They want to work with the worldwide community to
overcome the issue. They have said that is their duty
to protect the gift. They believe that they have been
called to look after the gift to respond to God’s gift of
love and to declare the threat of global warming and
the effect that it will have on not just the pacific
islands but worldwide.

What’s happening on the Pacific Islands?…
Climate change doesn’t mean the world only get’s
warmer, the climate change brings extreme
storms as well. This means that particularly in the
Pacific the sea levels are rising drastically. One of
the Pacific Islands that is in real danger is Tuvalu;
it is a group of ninety islands. They are all low
lying islands with not one island being more than
4.5 metres over land. Global warming could
cause these islands to be swamped by the rising
sea levels. There is a predicted 88cm rise at sea
level over the next century which means that in
50 years time Tuvalu and other low-lying
countries in the Pacific Ocean could be lying
underwater. This is why they need your help.

One month of action!…
Take part in the one month of action challenge with your
church and you can really make a difference.
You could:
Run a whole month of climate change activities to
involve everyone
Arrange for a speaker to come and tell you about all the
issues
Take part in fund-raising events to raise money for a
wind turbine or solar panels to create energy for your
church.

What can we do?…
So, what can we do to help?
There are many different things that you can do to
help! For instance:
A month of action with your church.
You could become a climate change champion
You could even sign up to help at:
www.creationchallenge.org.uk
And don’t forget, you can make a difference in your
everyday lives. Use both sides of paper when your
writing, don’t leave your appliances on standby
always turn them off and always walk when possible.
These subtle changes can make a drastic change.
