Wi-Fi
Under Wi-Fi, you can turn your iPad's wireless connection on or
off, and easily join nearby networks so you can access the
internet. Once you join a network, your device will connect to it
automatically whenever it's in range.
To Turn Wi-Fi On or Off:
Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen.
Tap Wi-Fi in the left pane.
Next to Wi-Fi, tap the control to turn it ON or OFF.
If the network isn't secure, you can
connect to it without a password,
but you should think carefully
before you do (especially if it's a
public hotspot; for example, Wi-Fi
at your local coffee shop).
Joining Networks
To join a network that's in range (for example, your home's WiFi, or a nearby public hotspot), look for it under Choose a
Network. Then tap the network you want to use. If the
network is secure, you'll need to enter a password in order to
connect to it.

To Set a Passcode:
By default, iPad doesn't require a passcode to unlock it, but you can
set one to help protect your device.
Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen.
Tap General in the left pane.
Next to Passcode Lock, tap the control to view your options.
•Tap Turn Passcode On.
•Use the keypad to enter your 4-digit passcode.
Once you unbox your iPad, you’ll immediately want to
connect the iPad’s USB cable to your default home machine
and open iTunes. When iTunes launches you’ll be asked to
activate the iPad, agree to its Terms and Conditions, and
register your device.
iTunes will serve as your iPad’s backup system and will
suggest that you restore your iPad from a previous iPhone
or iPod Touch backup if you have one of those devices or
start with a clean content slate on your iPad.
Next, you can choose to automatically sync applications,
photos, music and videos. Choose wisely — depending on
your media inventory, the initial sync process could take
awhile. It is recommend to deselect the automatic sync
options and customize your iPad preferences via iTunes
after this step.
iTunes on your laptop or
desktop will serve as your
iPad’s home base. After the
initial setup process, you
will want to customize your
iPad’s media content and
configure your settings.
Start by selecting your iPad
in iTunes; it’s located under
the Devices label in the lefthand menu bar.
Info: From the Info tab you can choose to sync your address box
contacts, iCal calendars, mail accounts, and Safari notes and
bookmarks. In the advanced section you can elect to have iTunes
sync your iPad’s contacts, calendars and mail accounts with your
computer.
Apps: This is where you’ll go to manage your iPad apps. If you own
an iPhone or iPod Touch, you’ll notice that all of the apps you
already own are pre-populated here. Select the apps that you want
to appear on your iPad from the left-hand menu, which can by
sorted by name, category or date. You can then drag-and-drop the
ticked apps to switch them from one iPad page to another. You can
also drag-and-drop individual pages to rearrange them.
Music: The music tab will let you sync your entire music library or
individually-selected playlists, artists and genres. Should you select
the latter, you can manage those songs from the Music option
below your iPad in the Devices section of the left-hand menu.
Movies: In this section you can manage the movies that will be
synced with your iPad. Use the drop down menu to specify whether
you want to automatically sync all movies or just some of them. You
can also scroll down to select to sync individual movie playlists.

Updating Your Software
Software Update is where you can check for - and download iOS updates from Apple. Updates frequently include bug fixes
and other improvements designed to enhance your experience
with the iPad. To view updates, tap Software Update while in
General Settings. Then tap Download and Install if an update is
available.
Locations Services
is an optional setting that, when turned on, uses Wi-Fi
and/or 3G or 4G to determine your current location. This
data can be used by different apps in many different ways.
Find My iPad
This feature uses location data to help you find your iPad (and
remotely protect it from misuse) if it's ever lost or stolen. You can
also use it to make your iPad play a sound in the event that
you've just misplaced it. To enable this feature, tap Find My iPad
while in Location Services. Then tap the control to turn it ON or
OFF.
Backing Up Your Ipad
A manual backup is a good idea if you expect to
exchange your device or if you plan on doing something
that could wipe the information on your iPad.
1. Plug in your iPad to a computer running the latest
version of iTunes.
2. Once the sync is complete, right-click the iPad under
the DEVICES list and click Back Up from the menu that
appears.
Note: iPad backups will only save the device’s settings,
not the applications, photos, videos, etc. Those items
are saved if Sync for each of those categories is enabled.
To Adjust Brightness and Wallpaper
Tap Brightness & Wallpaper in the left pane.
Drag the slider to make your screen darker or lighter.
Tap the area under Wallpaper to view your options.
Use the menu bar to apply the wallpaper to your Lock
Screen, Home Screen, or Both
To Edit Sound Settings:
Tap Sounds to view your options.
Use the settings in this pane to adjust the volume for sound
effects, change your alerts, or turn certain effects ON or OFF.
The Picture Frame feature turns your iPad into an animated
picture frame.
Rearrange your icons
by touching and holding any app on the Home screen. When
the icons begin to shake, drag and drop them wherever you
want (even on or off the dock) to change their arrangement.
To move an icon to another screen, drag it to the left or right
edge. When you're done, press the Home button on your
device to save your changes
Create a folder by dragging one icon on top of another. To
add more icons to the folder, keep dragging and dropping
the ones you want.

an app, a link, or a song you want to download. Tap and hold to
occasionally access other options (think of this as "rightclicking").

on the screen.

apps.
Double tap to zoom in or out on photos, webpages, and
certain apps.

Customizing Your Dock:
The iPad is set up with four apps on the dock that appears
at the bottom of all Home screens. Take advantage of the
extra screen size and add up to two more. Tap and hold an
app you want to add until all of the apps begin jiggling.
Then drag the app to the Dock. Press the Home button
when you're done.
Muting:
Quickly mute your iPad by pressing and holding the volume
down button. After two steps down the slider, the volume
jumps to off. A good tip to quickly quite that video you
launched in the middle of a meeting!
Jumping Back to the Top:
Tap the status bar at the top of the screen to jump back to
the top of the page or window you're viewing.
Locking the Screen Orientation:
Move the switch above the volume controls to the orange
position to lock screen rotation.
Notifications
are pop-ups, banners, and other audio/visual cues that let you
know when something on your iPad needs your attention.
To open the Notification Center, swipe down from the top if
your screen.
To Manage Your Notifications:
•Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen.
•Tap Notifications in the left pane.
•The right pane will list every app that can be set up to notify you.
•To edit any of your existing notifications, tap an app under
In Notification Center.
•To set up notifications for an app for the first time, scroll down
and find it under
•Not in Notification Center.

Spotlighting:
You can use the spotlight feature on your iPad to search
for content located on your iPad. The search will return
all results including documents, email, and apps with the
query you type. This can be handy for finding content
and launching apps. Instead of searching through
numerous pages filled with apps, quickly find an app by
using the spotlight function and the app name.
iBooks:
IBooks doesn't let you change the background color to
black and text to white like you can on the Kindle. But
here is a workaround. Go to Settings >General
>Accessibility >Triple Click Home. Set this to "Toggle white
on black." Now, when you click the home button three
times quickly, all the color values of whatever app you're
in will be reversed. This lets you read iBooks in white on
black.
Getting started
•Choose your template. Apple provides 16 to help you get started
as quickly as possible.
•When you've opened a template, or opted to start writing a new
blank document, the onscreen keyboard will pop up so you can
start typing straight away.
•To look up a word in the dictionary, or copy a term, you can press
and hold a section of a text and a pop up box will give you all the
options you need, including the definition of a word or expression.
•You can change the fonts, text size and formatting, word wrap,
alignment, line spacing and anything else to do with how the
document looks by tapping the format icon at the top of the screen.
More options appear in the Text Options menu at the bottom of
the formatting tab.
•Pictures can be changed too using the picture tab (next to the
format key) within Pages.
Finding a document
•Pages documents are all displayed in the document manager.
This is where you can import documents from your email or
Word.
•To shuffle through the documents, you simply have to swipe
across through them, and then tap to select.
In Numbers, you can create spreadsheets by placing multiple
tables, charts, photos, and text on the same sheet. Numbers offers
a variety of templates with different types of tables. Use the Blank
template to begin with an empty table. You can also open and edit
a spreadsheet in Numbers ’09, Microsoft Excel, or commaseparated value (CSV) file formats, but first you must import it to
your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.
Create a new spreadsheet:
In Spreadsheets view, tap in the top-left corner of the screen, and then
tap Create Spreadsheet.
Tap the template you want to use.
Double-tap in a table cell, and then enter your own data.
Open an existing spreadsheet:
Tap its thumbnail image in Spreadsheets view.
You can import a spreadsheet through iTunes, email, iWork.com
Public Beta, iCloud, or iDisk.
To print a sheet:
1.Tap in the toolbar, and then tap “Share and Print.”
2.Tap Print to open the Print Preview.
Print Preview shows you how your sheet fits on the page, or how the
sheet may be broken across multiple pages. By default, the sheet is
automatically fitted to a single page width.
3.Tap Landscape or Portrait in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen,
depending on whether you want your sheet to print in portrait or
landscape orientation on the page.

the App Store
On the iPad, the App Store gives you access to over 140,000 apps aside
from the ones built into your device. There, you'll find everything from
games, to entertainment, to productivity tools - even apps that can help
you with common tasks like studying for an exam, or traveling abroad. In
short, if you have something in mind, there's a good chance you'll find an
app for it in the App Store.
With the built-in iTunes app, you can purchase all kinds of media from
the iTunes store, then watch or listen to it instantly on your device.
This includes music, movies, TV shows, and audio books. You can even
download/subscribe to free audio or video podcasts.
Syncing with iTunes
Another great feature of iTunes is the fact that you can sync your
purchased items between other devices; for example, your computer,
iPhone, or iPod Touch. That means you can buy content on your
iPad (or visa versa), then watch or listen to it from any device. You
can set up syncing by connecting your iPad to your computer,
