What is CPAP?
•
•
CPAP is a continuous
positive airway pressure
treatment that is used for
patients that have breathing
disorders such as Sleep
Apnea
CPAP is also used to treat
premature infants that do not
have fully developed lungs
CPAP Machine
•
Composed of a flow
generator that pushes positive
pressure into a tube that
connects to a mask
• The mask is placed on the
patients nose and/or mouth,
where the air enters and then
continues to the throat
keeping the upper airway
open.
Advantages/Disadvantages
Advantages
• Decrease of possible
risks of:
 Arrhythmias
 Heart Failure
 High Blood pressure
 Stroke
•
Improve overall sleep
cycle
• Improve survival rate
for premature infants
•
•
Disadvantages
Lack of patient
compliancy
Patient are
uncomfortable with
equipment
Future
•
•
•
Better patient compliancy
Research for possible alternative treatments
Change in design of the equipment
