Final Presentation

GarageBand:
designed for?
•A great introductory program and easy to use tool to
compose music for the accomplished musician, or even
for people without any musical experience.
•Anyone with an interest in learning to play music
•This program can serve as a recording studio, a place for
composition, to learn how to play instruments or record
your own music.
This is Magic Jam Band virtual scene where you
can play along with other instruments on your
own acoustic by just plugging in your instrument
to your computer!
What you can do
with GarageBand
-Learn to play Piano, Guitar
or Keyboard using
GarageBand lesson tutorials
-Notations include:
Chord names
Chord Grids,
Tab,
Standard
GarageBand makes it easy to:
-Change tempos to make learning at any pace possible.
-Purchase select songs from itunes on your Mac where
the actual lesson is taught by the artist!
-Play along with the artist, and mute different aspects of the
band/voice, so that you can be the featured soloist!
How I use GarageBand
-Film Scoring, I have used GarageBand to complete
some of my first film scoring projects.
-Upload my own short films through iMovie, and
simply dragging the movie into the GarageBand
program where I can begin my composition.
-Compatible with all Mac programs (iDVD, iMovie) to
use in congruence with each other!
How to Begin a Project
•Open the GarageBand Icon on your computer, and open a new File
for “New Movie Score”
•Create a title for your project and the window will open where you
can begin your masterpiece.
•Find a video or film clip of your choice and save it to a flash drive,
where it is easy to use ‘drag and drop’ or import into GarageBand
through iMovie or iDVD.
•From here you can build your own musical lines or even use
GarageBand’s large library of loops and clips to form a composition
to accompany your film.

Creating a song is easy with GarageBand
You can record your voice, or an acoustic
instrument, add drums loops/beats until you
find just the right sound you want.
You can cycle loops, cut or add them just as you
please.
Recording a guitar:
simply click record
and play along with
the already written
cycle and then
automatically loops
for a second take.
Complete recording
and listen and
choose which take
you prefer, or drag
them out to use all
the recorded
material!
Acoustic instruments, plug directly into your
computer and press record. Can modify using
different presets such as echoes. When ready to
record, simply press record and begin!
Using a Software Instrument:
Can use the musical keyboard on
your normal keyboard or even
connect your own keyboard to
play the software instrument. You
can plug in any instruments.
-Use drag and drop to change
start/stop/loops etc.
-Easy to isolate particular parts of
your song by using the mute and
solo buttons.
Can also use pan left and right to
help balance your parts.
This is a great introductory program to use to
make yourself familiar with synchronizing
music to motion by using beat, mood,
rhythms and themes to highlight action.
GarageBand makes it easy to create a
‘sample’ of a score you really would like to
use as a source for a future original
composition.
•If you are already an accomplished musician, you
may find yourself setting too low of standards and
using the library of clips offered by GarageBand
instead of creating your own.
•Many compositions may end up sounding very
similar in style.
•Although it is a great feature that all programs
such as iDVD, iMovie, iTunes and Garage are
completely compatible, you must have a MAC and if
you don’t have the latest versions of all the
programs, it creates many problems, very quickly!
Publishing your compositions:
You can easily upload songs to
iTunes, or even create an iPhone
ringtone, Podcast or burn a cd for a
demo!
If you own or buy a Mac computer, GarageBand
comes with it free. The program is unfortunately
only available to Mac users, but this is just more
incentive to become a Mac user!
Thank you!
