What Is Hydrotherapy?
 Definition
 Collins Dictionary
 (medicine) the treatment of certain diseases by the
external use of water, esp by exercising in water in
order to mobilize stiff joints or strengthen weakened
muscles
 Hydrotherapy allows controlled exercise incorporating the
benefits of water.
 It is Zero impact or Low impact exercise.
 To be therapeutic, the water temperature needs to be heated
and maintained between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius and be
adequately sanitized.
 It may involve swimming in a pool, the use of an underwater
treadmill or standing an animal in water whilst carrying out
specific exercises.

Why Is Water Useful For
Rehabilitation
 Water has properties which can help enhance recovery
from injury, surgery and degenerative diseases.
 It increases function and mobility of joints and
muscles.
 It helps to reduce pain and increase circulation.
Effects of Hydrotherapy
 Pain Relief
 Reduction in Stiffness and Swelling
 Improved Range of Movement in Limbs
 Improved Muscle Strength
 Improved Circulation
 Improved Cardiovascular Fitness
 Increased Mental Stimulation
 Improved Gait Pattern
 Improved Quality of Life

Hip Dysplasia
 Dysplasia means the joint is not formed properly, this
can be due to environmental or genetic causes
 Hip Dysplasia results in pain for the effected animal,
secondary arthritis in the effected joint, often they
become reluctant to exercise therefore have an
increased risk of becoming obese.
 They have a reduced range of motion in the effected
joint and lose muscle mass.

Cruciate Ligament Rupture
The Cranial Cruciate Ligament is a
fibrous band that connects the femur to
the tibia.
Cranial Cruciate Ligament can be
sprained, partially ruptured or fully
ruptured.
Cruciate tears can be environmental,
genetic or through trauma. Trauma is
uncommon and is most likely
degenerative.
Osteoarthritis
 Arthritis is the body trying
to stabilise the joint.
 For arthritis patients we are
looking at improving the
quality of life and
managing the symptoms,
some patients can manage
with hydrotherapy alone
some patients also need
anti-inflammatory drugs or
additional pain relief.
Obesity
 It is estimated that 1 in 3 dogs in the UK are overweight
 Overfed and under exercised
 Obesity adds extra stress on the body
