Kids Creating Videos
It's This Easy!
An Introduction to
Integrating Video
into the
Classroom

Who's in the audience today?
Grade Level and Subject Taught
What is your experience with student-created video?
What aspect of video do you want to focus on in
your classroom?
Why Use Video in
the Classroom?
• Student Engagement
• Student Sense of Achievement
• 21st Century Learning Skills - especially Higher
Order Thinking Skills and Media Literacy
• Closes the Digital Divide (Digital Native vs.
Digital Immigrant)

Benefits for Teachers
• Demonstration (one-time)
o
•
•
•
•
Allows teacher to demonstrate things you may not be able to
within the confines or timeframe of the regular classroom
Review of Curriculum
Extra Support Materials
“Speak the same language”
Allows students who are absent to easily catch-up
on work missed
• Usually only have to make it one time
Student Created Video
• Allows students to learn new concepts in
conjunction with their subject material
• Differentiated Instruction / Student Choice
• Though more work in initial set-up, often easier
end result
• Proper training on equipment/software is VITAL
• May require students to put in additional time
independent from classroom
Pre-Production
• Good video begins with a lot of pre-production
planning:
What story do you want to tell? Why is it
important? What message do you want to
convey?
o Audience - Who are the people who care
about this topic?
o Location - Where does the story take place?
o
Production Team Roles
• Many jobs involved; Size of your group will
dictate whether these are shared or individual
duties
• A four person team could be comprised of a
Director/Producer; a
Researcher/Writer/ Storyboard Artist, a Camera
Operator/Sound, and an Editor/Special Effects
person.
• Make sure the exact responsibilities for each
team member are clear before you begin actual
planning of video.

• Field Trip
Exploration Time
Let's look at a few examples, thinking
about the following:
• Evidence of Pre-production work
• Audience - who is it?
• Story or message

• Quality is acceptable for basic classroom
and online use
• Often can connect directly to display
(TV or Projector)
• If high-quality video is needed, use a
better digital video camera (Sanyo HD1010 or
equivalent).
• Use a Tripod!!
