•REPUBLICAN
WRITE DOWN ALL THE WORDS THAT COME
TO MIND WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD…
•DEMOCRAT
CONSIDER THE CONNOTATION/TONE OF THE
WORDS…
•WHAT DOES THAT TELL US?
HOW DID WE GET TO BE SO POLARIZED?
•BUT, LET’S FIRST DEFINE THE TERM:
POLITICAL POLARIZATION
• …REFERS TO THE DIVISION OF POLITICAL PARTIES ALONG IDEOLOGICAL* LINES
AND MOVEMENT AWAY FROM THE POLITICAL CENTER.
• AFFECTIVE POLARIZATION : HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE HAVE REALLY STRONG
IDEOLOGICAL VIEWS AND THEY LIVE WITH SIMILARLY MINDED PEOPLE SO
THEY DISTRUST OR DISDAIN THE OTHER SIDE
** AN IDEOLOGY IS A COLLECTION OF DOCTRINES OR BELIEFS SHARED BY MEMBERS OF A GROUP.
ARE WE POLARIZAED?
• 2014 PEW RESEARCH SURVEY: 38% DEMOCRATS, 43% REPUBLICANS HAVE A
“VERY UNFAVORABLE” VIEW OF THE OTHER PARTY.
• 1994 PEW RESEARCH SURVEY: 16% DEMOCRATS, 17% REPUBLICANS HAVE A
“VERY UNFAVORABLE” VIEW OF THE OTHER PARTY.
HAVE WE ALWAYS BEEN POLARIZED?
NO! WE GO THROUGH PERIODS OF
POLARIZATION – IT IS NOT A CONSTANT IN OUR
DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM
1950S AND EARLY 1960S – THE PARTIES
WERE MORE PURPLE
CENTER
DEMOCRATS
REPUBLICANS
BETWEEN THE 1960S AND 1990S…
•THE DEMOCRAT PARTY BECAME MORE LIBERAL
•THE REPUBLICAN PARTY BECAME MORE

HOW DID WE GET TO BE SO POLITICALLY
POLARIZED?
• 4 MAJOR TRENDS LED TO AND HELPED CREATE THE
POLARIZATION WE HAVE NOW
TREND #1. MOVEMENT OF PARTIES TO THE
LEFT AND THE RIGHT
Ideological
center
MINI HISTORY LESSON!
• 1950S: DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS MODERATE AND SIMILAR
• 1960S: DEMOCRATS SPLIT! NORTHERN DEMS PRO FEDERAL LAWS TO STOP SEGREGATION
AND STATES’ JIM CROW LAWS. SOUTHERN DEMS WANTED STATES TO HAVE THE RIGHT TO
KEEP THESE THINGS.
• 1970S: “DIXIECRATS” (SOUTHERN DEMS) LEAVE TO REPUBLICAN PARTY; DEMS HAVE MORE
UNIFORM IDEOLOGY
• 1980S: NEWT GRINGRICH RALLIED REPS BEHIND UNIFIED MESSAGE AND IDEOLOGY TO
REGAIN CONTROL OF HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
• 1990S: THIS WORKS. PARTIES ARE POLARIZED.
TREND #2. HIGH LEVELS OF INCOME
INEQUALITY
INCOME INEQUALITY AND POLARIZATION
• THESE RISE AND FALL WITH ALMOST PERFECT CORRELATION - EACH MAKES THE
OTHER WORSE
• AS INCOME INEQUALITY RISES, PEOPLE DISAGREE ON HOW TO FIX IT
• GOV. NOT DOING ENOUGH TO HELP POOR?
• GOV. DOING TOO MUCH AND HURTING JOBS AND ECONOMY?
• ERODES FAITH IN DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM!
TREND #3. INCREASED IMMIGRATION
IMMIGRATION AND POLARIZATION
• UNLIKE INCOME INEQUALITY – NOT INHERENTLY BAD!
• LIKE INCOME INEQUALITY – CAUSES DEEP DIVIDES IN HOW IT IS PERCEIVED AND
WHAT (IF ANYTHING) SHOULD BE DONE
• ARE IMMIGRANTS HELPFUL?
• HARMFUL?
TREND #4. 24-HOUR NEWS COVERAGE &
THE INTERNET
YOUR TURN!
• TELL A PARTNER: HOW MIGHT HAVING A 24-HOUR NEWS CYCLE (NEWS
PROGRAMS ON AND REPORTING ALL DAY EVERY DAY) AND CONSTANT ACCESS TO
NEWS AND POLITICS ON THE INTERNET MAKE PEOPLE MORE POLARIZAED IN
THEIR POLITICAL VIEWPOINTS?
WHAT WE AGREE ON
•“LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES TEND TO AGREE THAT
DEMOCRACY IS THE BEST WAY TO GOVERN AND THAT WE SHOULD
ACHIEVE IT THROUGH THE DEMOCRATIC STRUCTURES OUTLINED
IN STATE AND FEDERAL CONSTITUTIONS”
•
PAULA MACAVOY, “POLARIZED CLASSROOMS” TEACHING TOLERANCE, FALL 2015, P. 19
WHAT WE DISAGREE ON
• HOW MUCH (IF AT ALL) SHOULD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REGULATE THE
ECONOMY?
• HOW MUCH POLITICAL POWER SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE STATES VS. THE
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?
• TO WHAT EXTENT (IF AT AL) SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDE A A SOCIAL
SAFETY NET FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF OUR SOCIETY?
• WHICH VALUES SHOULD BE GIVEN PRIORITY WHEN THEY COME INTO
CONFLICT (SUCH AS WHEN CIVIL LIBERTIES ARE IN TENSION WITH
NATIONAL SECURITY)?
POLITICAL IDEOLOGY ANSWERS THREE
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
1. WHAT IS A GOOD SOCIETY?
2. HOW SHOULD WE GET IT?
3. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEMS WE SEE TODAY?
SO, WHY SHOULD I CARE?
LOOK BACK AT YOUR POLITICAL SPECTRUM
