


Content type -- RDA 6.9 -- MARC 336 field
Media type -- RDA 3.2 -- MARC 337 field
Carrier type -- RDA 3.3 -- MARC 338 field
RDA Test at LC: June 2010 -Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
3.2 Media type
• Scope = “a categorization reflecting the
general type of intermediation device required
to view, play, run, etc., the content of a
resource”
• MARC field 337
• Broad categories; specific types in Carrier
type (RDA 3.3)
RDA Test at LC: June 2010 -Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
3.3 Carrier type
• Scope = “a categorization reflecting the format
of the storage medium and housing of a carrier
in combination with the type of intermediation
device required to view, play, run, etc., the
content of a resource”
• Do not confuse with Extent (RDA 3.4)
• Does not replace Extent (MARC 300)
RDA Test at LC: June 2010 -Module 2
Section 2, Chapter 6
6.9 Content type
• Scope = “fundamental form of communication
in which the content is expressed and the
human sense through which it is intended to

337 $a unmediated $2 rdamedia
338 $a volume $2 rdacarrier
Section 1, Chapter 3
3.4 Extent
• Scope = “the number and type of units and/or
subunits making up a resource”
– Unit = e.g., a volume
– Subunit = e.g., a page of a volume
• Formerly known as “SMD”

• Core if the resource is complete or total extent
known
• Used with (not instead of) Content, Media and
Carrier types.
Adapted from RDA Test at LC:
June 2010 -- Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
Recording extent
General instructions 3.4.1
Give number of units and “appropriate term”
Term is either:
– A term from Carrier type list at RDA 3.3.1.3
– Another term to designate the type of unit (RDA
3.4.1.5) if term not in list, or, a term in common
use is preferred
Adapted from RDA Test at LC:
June 2010 -- Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
Recording extent
• Several categories covered by exceptions (e.g.,
text, still images, notated music, cartographic
resources)
– Their own instructions – 3.4.2-3.4.6
– Their own lists of terms
Adapted from RDA Test at LC:
June 2010 -- Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
Recording extent
• No abbreviations for terms (e.g., “pages,”
“volumes”)
• Use “approximately” (not “ca.”) and “that is”
(not “i.e.”)
• For Text - use “unnumbered” rather than
square brackets enclosing the numeral
Adapted from RDA Test at LC:
June 2010 -- Module 2
Section 1, Chapter 3
Recording Extent
• Changes in vocabulary from AACR2, e.g.:
– Moved to Carrier or Media type lists – eg filmstrip,
slide (formally SMDs for Graphic Materials)
– New – eg. sculpture (3.4.6)
– Changed – eg. “close score” and “miniature score”
to “condensed score” and “study score” (3.4.3)
Transition tip:
• Check terms in all these lists before recording
extent
