FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE NOTES

STYLE
oThe distinctive way in which a writer
uses language.
Ranges from how they put sentences
together to their choice of vocabulary
and use of literary devices.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Language used by writers to
produce images in readers' minds
and to express ideas in fresh,
vivid, and imaginative ways.
METAPHOR
oA comparison between two things that are basically not
alike.
oIn the comparison, one thing becomes another.
oExamples:
oWhen I was grounded my home was a prison.
oThe silence during the Our Town test was music to our
ears.
oYou could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare.
SIMILE
oA comparison between two things that are
basically not alike using “like” or “as” to make the
comparison.
oExamples:
oYou make me smile like the sun…sing like a bird…spin
like a record…
o Siblings fight like cats and dogs.
oWithout my glasses I am as blind as a bat.
PERSONIFICATION
oThe act of giving human qualities to something that is
not human.
oExamples:
oThe city was sleeping as I took my 3A.M. walk.
oThe wind whispered softly in the night.
oLove bites, love bleeds
It's bringin' me to my knees
Love lives, love dies
It's no surprise
Love begs, love pleads
ALLITERATION
oThe repetition of similar consonant sounds
within a phrase or sentence.
oExamples:
o How much wood would a woodchuck chuck If a
woodchuck would chuck wood? A woodchuck
would chuck all the wood he could chuck If a
woodchuck would chuck wood.
o“Little darling, It's been a long cold lonely winter”
REPETITION
oThe act of repeating words or phrases for dramatic
effect.
oExample
o“I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them,
Sam I Am. I would not like them in a house…”
o“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end.”
o“And so even though we face the difficulties of today
and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply
rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one
day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning
of its creed…
SENSORY DETAILS
oImages and/or details that emphasize our senses.
osight, sound, smell, taste, and/or touch.
oExample:
oThe trash has been sitting there so long that the smell
overpowers everything else. It smells like feet mixed with
B.O.
oI took a bite, and the sticky sweetness of the jelly made
my mouth water.
oI pulled the itchy wool blanket over my head.
