What do you already know about
the orchestra?
Pitch, Range and Timbre
• There are a lot of instruments in the orchestra, but they all sound different
– We need to be able to describe the differences
• We can describe the pitch of the instrument – if it is high or low
•We can describe the range of the instrument – can it play many notes, or just a few?
•We can describe the timbre of the instrument – the quality of sound.
It can be harsh, light, dark, shrill, warm, deep, bright, dull etc.
Layout
• There are special seats for each instrument in the orchestra.
• There are 4 families in the orchestra – instruments that are similar to each other
• Instruments in the same families sit near each other.
• A conductor leads the orchestra, and stands up the front.
