Ligaments and tendons
tough fibrous band of connective tissue that
serves to support the internal organs and
hold bones together in proper articulation at
the joints.
Encyclopedia Britannica Online, 2014
Ligaments of the knee joint are often the
most commonly known e.g. Anterior cruciate
ligament (ACL)
Tissue that attaches a muscle to other body
parts, usually bones. Tendons are the
connective tissues that transmit the
mechanical force of muscle contraction to the
bones; the tendon is firmly connected to
muscle fibres at one end and to components
of the bone at its other end.
Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014
The most commonly known tendon is the
Achilles tendon. A tendon is positioned at
each end of each muscle.
Ligaments connect bone to bone
Tendons connect muscle to bone
Most skeletal muscle is attached to bone on its
ends by tendons. As the muscles contract, they
exert force on the bones, which help to support
and move our body along with its appendages.
In most cases, one end of the muscle is fixed in
its position, while the other end moves during
contraction.
The origin is the attachment site that doesn't
move during contraction, while the insertion is
the attachment site that does move when the
muscle contracts.

The insertion is usually distal, or further
away, while the origin is proximal, or closer
to the body, relative to the insertion. For
example, one could say the wrist is distal to
the elbow. Conversely, you can say the elbow
is proximal to the wrist.
We will learn these anatomical terms in the
coming weeks.

In each square you need to write the
name of a bone or ligament, tendon,
origin or insertion. We will then swap
the bingo cards around the room and I
will call out names and if they are on
your card you need to cross them off.
Once you have crossed your whole
card out, you yell bingo!
