What is Biomedical Science

(a) 50,000 Health Care Scientists who work
predominantly in the NHS
(b) Facilitate the diagnosis of disease eg cancer,
diabetes, toxicological studies, blood
transfusion, cervical smears infections
including meningitis, hepatitis and AIDS
Routes to graduation in Biomedical Science
Biomedical Science (BMS) programme:
Three possible routes to graduation
These options have been designed and
implemented because:
(a) Some students want to study BMS (but not
practice the profession after graduation)
(b) Some students wish to practice as Health and
Care Profession Council (HCPC) registered
Biomedical Scientists immediately following
graduation
Routes to Graduation in BMS at Aston University
All students enrol on
the same programme
Years 1 and 2 of
study are identical
Option 2 (sandwich placement)
1 year sandwich placement to gain
work experience eg research lab
(4 year IBMS course)
Option 1
Option 3 (integrated placement)
Proceed directly to the final
1 year clinical placement in a
year (3 year IBMS course) HCPC approved Pathology Laboratory
(4 year course)
Route 3 optimal for
students wishing to
practice as HCPC
registered BMS following
graduation

wishing to practice in the

Entry Requirements for Biology / BMS / MBiol
GCE A Level
Typically ABB (320 UCAS points)
-Must include one biological subject
-Chemistry preferred but not essential
-Additional AS levels taken into account
Access to HE / BTEC National Certificates & Diplomas:
Considered on an individual basis
IB (33 points+):
Inclusive of six subjects (3 taken at HL and inclusive of Biology)
GCSE:
English language, mathematics and appropriate sciences
at grade C or above
