Port Arthur Massacre
Occurred at historic, tourist attraction, Port Arthur in
Australia
Gunman killed 35 and wounded 23 people
Reaction to Port Arthur
Prime Minister, John Howard, forced all states to
adopt the National Firearms agreement
Restricted private ownership of semi-automatic
riffles, semi-automatic shotguns, and pump-action
shotguns
Country introduced a buy-back scheme;
purchased and destroyed nearly 1 million firearms
13 mass shootings before 1996 in Australia. 0 after
new gun control laws.
Gun Control in Other Countries
Germany: Buying a gun under the age of 25, have
to pass a psychiatric evaluation
Finland: Handgun applicants can only purchase if
they are an active member of shooting clubs. Must
pass aptitude test, police interview, and have
proper gun storage
France: Firearm applicants must have no criminal
record, pass background check including criminal,
mental, and health records.
United Kingdom and Japan: Handguns are illegal
for private citizens

Licensed dealers require background check
HOWEVER, unlicensed dealers are not required to
run background checks
In the majority of the country, you can walk into a
gun show and walk out with a gun without any sort
of evaluation

possessing a harmful virus or bacteria
