Infection Control
In ED
PURPOSE
To protect ED personnel, other employees,
patient and visitors from exposure to infection
Procedure
I. Interventions should be made in order to
minimize the risk of infections to patients
and personnel due to extensive activities
in ED BY:
1) Recognizing signs and symptoms of
communicable diseases so that designated
examination rooms should be used for
suspected cases in order to prevent multiple
exposures of infectious agents to patients and
personnel.
2) Instituting of standard precaution by wearing
protective equipment
such as gloves, gowns, and/or masks
3) Practicing good hand washing techniques.
4) Discharging patient from the department
either to home or admit
where appropriate isolation techniques can be
instituted.
5) When transporting patients with infectious
disease to other areas
e.g.
Radiology department or patient care area:
- Wear gloves, masks, and gown as necessary.
- Have patient wear masks for agents spread
by droplets
- Cover draining/open wounds
6) Utilizing surgical sepsis in performing all
procedures
7) Using correct colour bags:
a) Blue/Black plastic bags:
(any disposable materials which are not
contaminated with blood and/or body fluids)
- IV tubing/bag with no blood
- Syringes not used for parentral therapy
- Ventilation tubing with no blood/body fluids
- Empty plastic medication bottles and bags
- Plates and cups
- Diapers and under pads (not with faces)
b) Yellow/Red plastic bags:
(any disposable materials contaminated with
blood and/or body fluids)
- All bloody IV set, protective wears - Urinary catheters and
bags
- used drainage bags
- All soiled dressing
- Disposable suction tubes, endotracheal tubes
d) bags
c) Soiled equipments into special transparent bag.
d) Soiled linen into laundry bag
8) Disposing used syringes with needles, broken glasses,
glass medication vials, IV needles into puncture resistant
containers.
9) Health education of patient about prevention and
control measures
10) Hand washing before and after touching wound dressing
11) Ensuring of all invasive equipments to processed by
CSSD.
12) Notifying all communicable diseases to all infection
control team.
II. Increasing frequency of environmental
cleaning by :
a. Cleaning environment daily and as warrant
utilizing hospital approved chlorine base disinfectant.
b. Wipe up blood spills, body fluids or secretions
promptly using chlorine base disinfectant.
c. Clean examination tables between patients and
remove disposable sheets and place clean sheets on
examination tables between patients.
Use Of Gloves In Hospitals
Purpose:
To know when gloves are to be used ,
and which type of glove to be used
for each clinical procedures.
Types of gloves :
1. Sterile surgical gloves
2. Disposable clean (examination) gloves
3. Utility or heavy duty gloves
General rules:
It should always be remembered that wearing
gloves does not replace the need for Hand
Hygiene (Hand washing or antiseptic hand rub)
Always wash hands or use antiseptic hand rub
before donning and after removing gloves.
A separate pair of gloves must be used for
each patient to avoid cross infection.
Disposal clean (examination) gloves should be
changed as soon as they are visibly soiled, torn
or punctured.
