• OSHA defines OPIM (other potentially infectious
material)
• OPIM includes semen and vaginal secretions, among other bodily
fluids
• OPIM must:
• Be fluids in which disease could be present and
• Come into contact with an entry point (hangnail, broken
skin, eyes, lips, mucous membranes, etc.)

Human immunodeficiency virus
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Ebola virus
• Pathogens transmitted through blood include: parovirus B-19,
chikungunya virus, Y. enterocolitica, trypanosoma cruzii, plasmodium
species, babesia necrotica, viral hemorrhagic fevers (e.g. Ebola), Zika,
syphilis, Hepatitis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.
• Effects range from pain and discomfort to sterility to organ failure and
death
