1.
Fill a container with 1 gallon of water (represents all of the
water in the world)
2. Take out 2.5 % (3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon) and place it in a
clear container (represents all of the freshwater in the world)
3. Of this amount, remove 70% (2 tablespoons) and place it in a
clear container (represents water trapped in glaciers or too deep to
access)
The remainder – less than 1 percent of the Earth’s total water supply – is
left to support human needs for agriculture, drinking, and washing, as well
as for lakes, rivers, and freshwater ecosystems.

1 billion people in the world do not have access
to safe water.
In Africa, two out of five people lack clean water.
An American taking a five minute shower uses
more water than a typical person living in a
developing country’s slum uses in a whole day.
Diarrhea: an intestinal disorder characterized by
abnormal frequency and fluidity of fecal evacuations
Dysentery: infection of the intestine with bacteria
Parasites: an organism living in, with, or on another
organism
Typhoid: an infectious, often fatal, febrile disease
The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives
through disease than any war claims through guns.
1.4 million children die every year from diarrhea
caused by unclean water and poor sanitation.
4,000 children die per day
One child dies every 20 seconds
