Responsibility
of Employer
3
Responsibility
of Employees
4
An Employee
has the right to:
5
Employers with more than 25
employees must establish a
joint labor-management safety committee
• A Facility Hazard
Communication
designee should
be named

BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS AND
UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS
Important resource  See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual
Blood Borne Pathogens
• Micro-organisms that are present in human
blood and can cause disease.
• These pathogens include but are not limited
to Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Transmission
• Blood Borne Pathogens are transmitted
through contact with infectious body fluids.
• Body fluids include: blood, urine, feces, and
vomit.
9
Universal Precautions:
Barriers for Infection Control
 Universal or Standard Precautions
An approach to infection
control where human blood
and certain body fluids are
treated as if infectious for HIV,
HBV, HCV and other blood
borne pathogens.
10
Barriers and Infection Control
Personal Protective Equipment
 Gloves
 Cleaning the area
 Discarding contaminated items
 Other barriers (mask, clothing, glasses)
11
OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Important resource  See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual
Adult Immunizations
Should be reviewed by the
employee
•
•
•
•
Hepatitis B
Varicella (Chicken pox)
Tetanus, Pertussis (Tdap)
Influenza (Flu) - annually
13
Routes of Entry
 Inhalation
 Ingestion
 Contact with or
through skin
 Absorption or
penetration
14
Hand Washing
The single most important measure to reduce
the risk of transmitting organisms!
15
•
If hand washing is not possible, the use
of hand sanitizers is acceptable on a
temporary basis.
•
The CDC recommends alcohol-based
hand sanitizers as the most effective
agents for reducing the amount of
bacteria on the hands.
16
Influenza
17
Cleaning / Disinfecting / Sanitizing
• Definitions
• Mechanical/Chemical
• Reducing Germs vs.
Eliminating Germs
See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual
18
What to Clean?
19
Sanitizing
• Bleach
• Quaternary
Ammonia
Products (QUATS)
CHEMICAL HAZARDS
When are you in danger from
chemicals at school?
•
•
•
•
Spills
Wrong Labels
Fumes
Follow MSDS/SDS for first aid
Use ALL your
senses to detect
hazards!
.
22
Be Sure to Check Labels
Hazard Communication
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
(Formerly MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets)
Chemical Hazards
Include:
 Cleaning Chemicals
 Bleach
 Office supplies (e.g.
toner for copierusually self
contained)
 Storage items in the
classroom, janitor
closet, kitchen
25
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Environmental Hazards
Heat
• Protecting students
and staff from Heat Stress
Cold
• Protecting from
hypothermia and frostbite
Other Safety Areas
 Fire prevention
 Stairs (especially with long skirts, carrying items)
 Wet floors from cleaning or spills
 Hot coffee
 Electrical cords
 Paper cuts
 Indoor air quality
 Proper ventilation with chemical, use especially for
Asthma and Allergy sensitivities
 Restrict use of fragrance
 Noise - ear buds use
28
Safety Level of Noise in Classroom, Gym
and School Environment
• dB (decibel) measures the sound level or loudness of
an object or background noise.
• Teach your students about the damage they can do
to their hearing with “ear buds” and loud music
environments.
29
ERGONOMICS AND PERSONAL
MEASURES
Ergonomics
 Lifting techniques
31
Ergonomics
 Computers
 Laptops
 Desk
 Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome
 Neck Pain
 Eye Strain
32
BOTTOM LINE-
Protect yourself
33
Personal Safety
 Be aware of your surroundings
 Have keys in your hand
 Evaluate the need for a purse
 Carry a flashlight at night
 If you feel threatened keep a clear head
and decide on an action plan
 If threat is imminent, yell or call police
34
Healthy Lifestyle
A healthy lifestyle strengthens your immune
system to increase the ability to fight pathogens:
•
•
•
•
Nutrition
Stress regulation
Physical Activity
Sleep
EMERGENCY ACTION PLANS
Injuries, Violence, Intruder, Evacuation, Pandemic
37
Evacuation
38
Injury/Accident
39
Discussion of the possible roles in first aid
treatment for student or staff
 Location of first aid materials
 Classroom
 Playground
 Field trips
 Location of /if AED in building
 Who is first aid & CPR trained?
40
Student’s or Victim’s
Role in Managing Care
41
Workplace Violence
42
Planning for an Emergency
 OSHA recommended First Aid supply
list for employees
 Drills practiced as legally required
 Policy plans written and
communicated
