Differentiated Instruction
• Is a model of instruction that revolves
around the belief that students learn
in many different ways
• It means:
Providing materials and tasks at varied levels of difficulty
with varying degrees of scaffolding, through multiple
instructional groups; and,
Encouraging student success by varying ways in which
students work: alone or collaboratively, in auditory or
visual modes, or through practical or creative means.

Reaches a variety of senses. This allows the individual to tailor or focus their learning to
their individual style, whether it is verbal, auditory or physical.

•
Validates self expression by allowing students to decide how they want to create a project
or assimilate information. Technology gives a sense of ownership to the user.

Creates an active rather than passive atmosphere for learning, which forces student
participation and makes them think. Technology fosters communication among students
as well as between student and teacher. They discuss the content, organization of content,
and how to present it to others (topics which may not have otherwise been discussed).
•
Makes sense because it is already built in to the everyday life of all students

Suggestions for a Differentiated Instructional
Technology Approach
• Identify student learning styles to customize learning experiences by
better meeting student needs.
• Offer students a choice when establishing projects and desired
outcomes.
• Technology integration should be seamless and meaningful, it's not
something "Extra".
• Start simple and build upon to establish an instructional repertoire.
• Use technology resources that are accessible 24/7.
• Ask your digitally connected students for assistance, they will enjoy it!!
• Be practical and realistic with yourself and your students.
• Have fun!
Get to Know Your Students
Multiple Intelligences
In his 1983 book called Frames of
Mind, Howard Gardner of Harvard
University identified seven
intelligences we all possess. Because
our understanding of the brain and
human behavior is constantly
changing, the number of intelligences
is expanding. Two to three new
intelligences had been added
recently. Gardner claims that we all
have all the intelligences, but that no
two people are exactly alike.
