Website Overview ideas
Senior school
home page
1. Student log on – we
would not be collecting
any information on
students, this would solely
be to allow them to keep
scores and collect
bonuses every time they
return to the site thereby
encouraging them to
return
2. High ranking scores –
on the home page we
could have a section of
high ranking scores, either
by individual visitor or by
country. This would add a
competitive feel to the
website and encourage
visitors to return.
3. A thermal map of
Europe showing how
many people are online at
that particular time point
4. FASCINATING FACTS
- a bank of 104
fascinating facts that
would change on a weekly
basis allowing 2 years
worth of facts
Create your
own avatar
Students could create their own avatar to guide them through the various sections
of the website, this avatar could potentially remind them of areas they have yet to
visit, give them updates on how they can earn more bonuses and tell them when
they have got answers wrong in the quiz or revision sections.
Downloads
SEM and EM photographs of various microbes and all pack artwork available for
download
Revision guide
a set of interactive pages on each of the e-Bug topics for students. Students would
be given the information in text and this would be followed up by an interactive
activity
Hall of Fame
A photograph or cartoon drawing hall of fame of people in history who have made
a positive contribution to science with background information and some
interesting facts to make them more human
Quiz
a large bank of questions (perhaps 200) meaning that every time a student visits
the website they get asked a different 20 questions. When they get a question
wrong they would be given correct answer and an explanation by their avatar. The
more they get right the higher their bonus bank would become.
Games
this is where you would connect to the e-Bug junior and senior games and any
other games that may be developed in the future
Disease fact
files
a set of fact cards on infectious diseases relevant to students
Home science
A set of activities that students could do at home to teach science e.g. Hand
hygiene pepper activity
Campaigns
Facilities to provide information on European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) or
Global hand washing day (GHD).

• Individualises the website for
each student
• Allows a sense of ownership
• Encourages students to
come back to site
• Can be used to give
bonuses i.e. Students can
unlock more items of
clothing as they earn more
points in quizzes etc
1. Create your own avatar
Ideas
The avatar would always be at the bottom of the screen
guiding them through the different sections of the website,
encouraging them to visit sections they haven’t been to before
The avatar could take the form of either
1. Amy, Harry and friends characters in the packs and allow
students to choose clothing etc for them
2. Be one of the microbes in the packs acting as a guide,
when you score more points you can upgrade or change
your microbe
1. Create your own avatar
Student Feedback
Junior Schools
Senior Schools
• No, can’t be bothered
logging in
• Really liked the idea
• Always forget my
password
• Would like a password hint
in case I forget my
password
1. Create your own avatar
Your Thoughts
Should it be human or a microbe?
Should they be on the screen all the time or should
students have the ability to close them down if they
wanted?
Any other thoughts?
2. Downloads
Downloads
SEM and EM photographs of various microbes and
all pack artwork available for download
• Photographs of the microbes
brings microbiology to life to
the students
• Downloadable pack clipart
helps reinforce classroom
learning
2. Downloads
Student Feedback
In General
• All groups of students liked the idea of downloads
• Both ages really liked looking at the microbes photographs
• Both ages thought that they would use the clip art in school
projects
• Junior school students thought that it might be a good idea to
label the images with the correct names but also phonetically
In your groups, how do you think
1. The section should look
1.
Thumbnails
b. List
c. filmstrip
1. The section should be divided i.e.
a.
Photographs
i.
Bacteria / useful and harmful
ii.
Viruses
iii. Fungi
or all in one
b. Clipart
i. Characters
ii. Microbes
iii. Backgrounds
1. Can you think on places where we can access more images
3. Revision Guides
Revision
guide
a set of interactive pages on each of the e-Bug topics for students.
Students would be given the information in text and this would be
followed up by an interactive activity
Introduction to Microbes
•
Microbes are very small living organisms, they are so
small we need a microscope to see them
•
There are three different types of microbes
•
•Viruses
•Bacteria
•Fungi
They come in many different shapes and sizes
Introduction to Microbes
• Encourages learning from
home
• Place where students can go to
find out more
Viruses
Viruses are the smallest of the microbes and can even live
inside other microbes!
Some viruses make us sick.
Diseases like CHICKENPOX and the FLU are caused by
viruses.
Viruses can spread from one person to another but it depends
on the type of virus.
This virus is called
Influenza (in-flu-en-za)
and causes the flu
• Helps with homework
• Incentive for teachers to
recommend the site to students
• Each set of revision pages
would be followed by an
interactive online activity
3. Revision Guides
Student Feedback
In General
• Very good idea
• The text should be simple but certain words should be
highlighted and you can click on these to find more information
• The activities should be after the revision sections so that you
do something AFTER you have learned about it
• The activities should ALSO be in the games sections for
students who have already done the revision sections and just
want to play games
In your groups, can you think on any simple web activities to
reinforce these learning outcomes
1. Introduction to Microbes
Will know that bacteria, viruses and fungi are three different types of microbe
Will understand that microbes are found everywhere
Will know that microbes come in different shapes and sizes
2. Good Microbes
Will understand that some microbes can help keep us healthy
Will know that some microbes can be put to good use
3. Harmful Microbes
Will know that sometimes microbes can make us ill
In your groups, can you think on any simple games to reinforce these
learning outcomes
4. Respiratory Hygiene
Will learn that infection can spread through sneezing and coughing
Will understand that covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing can prevent the spread
of infection
Will know that coughing or sneezing in your hand can still spread infection
5. Hand Hygiene
Will understand that infection can be spread through unclean hands
Will know that hand washing can prevent the spread of infection
6. Food hygiene
Microbes can be found on our food and can transfer to humans
Cooking food properly can kill harmful microbes
Bacteria multiply very quickly
Refrigeration only stops microbes growing, it doesn’t kill them
In your groups, can you think on any simple games to reinforce these
learning outcomes
7. Sexually Transmitted Infections
Will know that infection can be spread easily through sexual contact
Will understand what they can do to protect themselves against STIs
8. Vaccines
Vaccines help prevent a range of infections, including the flu
There are not vaccines for all infection
9. Antibiotic Use
Will understand that most common infections get better on their own through time,
bed rest, liquid intake and healthy living
Will understand that if antibiotics are taken, it is important to finish the course
4. Hall of Fame
Hall of Fame
People in history who have made a positive contribution to
science with background information and some interesting
facts to make them more human
• The Louvre website
• A literal hall of fame
4. Hall of Fame
Student Feedback
In General
• Find the old microbiologists boring
• They are not relevant to us today
Junior schools
Senior schools
• Like the Louvre museum idea
• Like the Hall of Fame idea
• Want pictures and cartoons
• Want to know about modern
scientists too
• Want interesting facts
• Images should be caricatures
which turn into the real photo
when you scroll over them
4. Hall of Fame
Ideas
In your groups, can you think on
1. Interesting facts on any of the above
2. Anyone else who should be included
3. Any modern scientists
5. Quiz
Quiz
a large bank of questions (perhaps 200) meaning that every time a
student visits the website they get asked a different 20 questions.
When they get a question wrong they would be given correct answer
and an explanation by their avatar. The more they get right the
higher their bonus bank would become.
• Students like competitive games
• Testing themselves encourages
learning
• Points earned would go to their
overall score and leadership
rankings, bonus points could be
achieved for getting all questions
correct
• Students can choose a select all
set of questions or select questions
by topic
5. Quizzes
Student Feedback
In General
• Want to know the correct answers to the questions they got wrong
• Prefer to choose a set of questions or a section to do,
• There should be no more than 5 – 10 questions in a round
Senior Students
• Like the idea of bonus points if they get all the questions right
Do you think that the quiz be based just on either
• the learning outcomes
• activities
• should it be broader??
6. Games
• Current online games
• All new online activities that will be created for the revision
pages
7. Disease Fact Files
Disease fact
files
a set of fact cards on infectious diseases relevant to
students
Lymphocryptovirus
Influenza A
The Epstein-Barr virus is a type of
Lymphocryptovirus
causing
an
illness known as the Kissing Disease
or Glandular fever. Patients suffer
from sore throats, swollen lymph
glands, and extreme tiredness.
The flu is an infection caused by
Transmission requires close contact
such as kissing or sharing drinks.Orthomyxoviridae. Every year 5 –
Varicellovirus
40% of the population get the flu
but
most
people
recover
completely in a couple of
weeks. In 1918, before there were
any vaccines for the flu, twenty
million people were killed!
Chickenpox is caused by the
Varicella-Zoster virus. It is highly
contagious although rarely serious
and is spread through direct contact
(or coughing and sneezing). Almost
everyone caught chickenpox in their
childhood prior to the discovery of
the chickenpox vaccine.
• Fact sheets relevant to
students needs
• Designed to reinforce the
fact that microbes can cause
disease
• Emphasises the three
different types of microbes
7. Disease Fact Files
Student Feedback
In General
• Both age groups liked this idea
• Wanted pictures of the microbes that caused the diseased and the
symptoms they caused
Junior schools
• Asked if there could be a search function so that if they typed in
sore throat they could get information on that quickly
