BUBONIC PLAGUE
THE BLACK DEATH
THEN AND NOW:
AN EPIDEMIC SIMULATION
What is the Bubonic Plague?
A disease passed to humans from fleas found on
rodents. The plague bacteria is in their system. A
Person then becomes infected when the flea bites
them.
The bacteria called Yesinia pestis
Flea bites become Buboes
FLEA BITES on LEG
BUBOES on FINGER
In Medieval Times, the Buboes became black because a
bruise like coloring (blood under skin) covered the
Buboes. BLACK PLAGUE
Bubonic Plague Symptoms
•Incubates in 2-8 days after being bitten by flea
•Bacteria travels to Lymph nodes near bite
•Patients feel high fever, chills and painful swelling
of lymph nodes
•Swelling may reach the size of an egg in 1-2
days
•Without antibiotics, death occurs in 3-6 days
RULES FOR BLACK PLAGUE SIMULATION
You will be given a travel plan, a skull and a pencil.
You will travel to each city on your itinerary and roll
a dice in that city. This will tell you how many days
you will stay in that city. Record number on travel
plan
You will pull a bean from the city bag.
BEANS, And WHAT THEY MEAN
YOU have NOT been
Infected with the Plague
Bacteria
WHITE BEANS
YOU have been Infected
with the Plague Bacteria
BLACK BEANS
BLACK BEANS
If you are infected (black bean) do this:
Travel to the next two cities on your travel plan.
Do not roll the die until you reach the second city.
Roll the die
• If you roll a 1, 2, or 3 add a black bean to the bag (ask teacher)
• If you roll a 4, 5, or 6 add 2 black beans to the bag (ask teacher)
• Take a small skull to the bag (ask teacher) and a large skull to
yourself.
• Sorry you are DEAD
• Return to main area and wait for others
WHITE BEANS
• You have not been infected!
• You may choose to stay in that city for
one more day.
• Record on your travel plan
• Continue on your journey.
TRAVEL PLAN INFORMATION
Remember to:
• Record how many days you stayed in each
city
• Record what you notice at each city
• Record the city you became infected in
• Record the city in which you died
• Record total days on trip
• Record any extra observations
FINAL NOTES
We will return to the classroom for
data collection when either all
people have died or completed their
journeys
BUBONIC PLAGUE IS STILL ACTIVE
VOCABULARY
an
epidemic occurs when new cases of a

during a given period, substantially exceed what is
