Planning your podcast – uses in
learning and teaching (I)
• Recording of lectures or special events e.g. outside
speakers
• Providing a précis or re-cap of the weeks lectures or
activities
• Subject expert interviews
• Assisting auditory learners, and/or providing for a variety
of learning styles, Accessibility
• Specific “listening practice” for certain disciplines e.g.
heart sounds in medicine, speech/phonetics, language
learning

• Lecturers providing group feedback on
assignments
• Students creating podcasts in a various contexts
• Submitting oral reports and/or other assignments
• Students capturing audio data as part of inquiry
based learning

Planning your podcast –
structure and format
• Establish your aims and objectives at beginning of series
and/or each episode
• Introduce yourself
• Let the students know what they are expected to do
during or after the podcast
• Consider adhering to a “format” if you are creating a
series
• Consider use of music, interviews etc to add variety

Good Practice for Podcasting –
audio Bit-rates
• MP3 files use compression to achieve small file
sizes
• Speech Only – set to 64 kbps
• Music – set to 128 Kbps

archiving your work :
• Always save your work regularly in Audacity
• Archive your work as uncompressed WAV (see
section 4.1 in Audacity guide)

• Upload your material to the ULCC server NOT
MOLE, cPanel or CMS

• Start Audacity (2.1)
• Record a short piece and listen back (3.1, 3.2)
• Check your recording level (3.3 NOT 4)
• Save your work (3.4)
• Experiment with editing options (3.5)
