Circulatory System
Got heart?
It’s Time to Deliver
• Carrying food, water, and oxygen
• Every cell needs food, water and oxygen to survive
• Circulatory system delivers these “goods”
• Removing wastes from the cells
• Body cells make waste
• The wastes must be removed from the cells, or they
would build up and prevent the cells from doing their
jobs properly.
• The circulatory system carries the wastes to other parts
of the body where the wastes are then removed from
the body.
The Little Things



Maintaining body temperature
•
Capillaries – tiny tubes that monitor temperature by
going close to the surface of our skin so our heat can
be released or retreated into our bodies to hold onto
the heat and protect the organs
Fighting disease
•
Circulate wastes through the body
Carrying chemicals
•
Medicine, liquids and other things we ingest are
delivered to different parts of the body
Parts of the Circulatory System:
The Heart




Organ – group of cells and tissue working
together to do the job of the circulatory
system
Most important and hardest working organ
About the size of your fist
Located in the middle of your chest behind
your ribs and breastbone
Parts of the Heart

Comprised of 4 chambers
Two upper chambers (atria)

Two lower chambers (ventricles)

• Right atrium
• Left atrium
• Right ventricle
• Left ventricle


Valves between the chambers
•
Think of the valves like doors that only open one way
Tricuspid valve
•
Opens from the right atrium into the right ventricle
Pulmonary valve
•
Opens from the right ventricle letting blood flow into
the pulmonary artery leading out of the heart
Mitral valve
•
Opens one way from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Aortic valve
•
Lets blood flow from the left ventricle out of the heart
through the aorta
Parts of the Heart


It is important for the blood on the right
side of your heart not to mix with the
blood on the left side of your heart.
Septum
• Thick wall of muscle between the two sides of
the heart
Diagram of the Heart
Two Pumps

Cardiac muscle
• The muscle in your heart that works to pump
your blood


One pump moves the blood from the
upper chambers, or atria, into the lower
chambers
The other pump moves the blood out of
the heart and into the lungs or body
Tubes, Tubes and More Tubes

Arteries
•
•
•
•

Blood vessels that lead blood away from the heart
Thick walls but they are very elastic
They can expand and contract as the blood is pumped
into them and then moves on
The arteries nearest your heart are the largest. As
they get further and further from the heart, they
become smaller and smaller
“Arteries go away”
Tubes, Tubes and More Tubes

Capillaries

“capillaries connect”
• Tiniest blood vessels in your body
• Blood goes through them single file
• Connect the arteries with the veins
Tubes, Tubes and More Tubes

Veins

“veins have valves”
• Carry blood toward the heart
• Thinner walls
• All blood flows in one direction
Recap

Two big jobs

Three smaller jobs

Three essential parts
• Carrying food, water and oxygen
• Removing wastes from the cells
• Maintaining body temperature
• Fighting disease
• Carrying chemicals
• Arteries
• Capillaries
• Veins
