• Born-Marguerite Johnson on April 4,1928, in St. Louis,
Missouri
• In 1935 Maya and her brother, Bailey go to live with their
mother in St. Louis and one year later is raped by her
mother's paramour, Mr. Freeman

Started career in 1952 winning scholarship to dance.
• Dr. Angelou has authored twelve best-selling books
• She is fluent in many languages such as: ENGLISH, FRENCH,
SPANISH, ITALIAN, ARABIC, WEST AFRICAN FANTI
• As poet, educator, historian, best-selling author,
actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer
and director, Dr. Angelou continues to travel the
world making appearances, spreading her

– Published in 1971, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings not only
chronicled Angelou's life through age 16, when she gave
birth to her son, Guy, but it also offered a clear, and
frightening, glimpse into the "separate but equal" black
experience of the pre-WWII era.

– The book details her life from the beginning in Stamps,
Arkansas, and relates how she has overcome many obstacles
throughout her life to
become the successful, educated woman she is today-author, political activist, actress, and singer.
