The Report on Reading!

STRATEGY FOCUS: Questioning.
Readers generate questions before,
during, and after reading to clarify
meaning, make predictions, and focus
on what’s important. This extends
knowledge of the topic and engages
readers in active comprehension.
SOCIAL STUDIES (or SCIENCE):
2.1 Explain how the contributions of
ancient China and Egypt have
influenced the present world in terms
of architecture, inventions, the
calendar, and written language.
2.4 Locate China and Egypt on world
maps.
IDEAS FOR HOME READING/SUBJECT SUPPORT:
MATH:
2.7 Solve addition problems with two
whole numbers without regrouping.
2.8 Solve subtraction problems with
two whole numbers without
regrouping.
2.26 Create and solve story problems.
*Read a book about China. Make a
poster showing what the important
influences are.
*Write “thank you” notes during the
holiday season. Remember the parts
of a friendly letter.
*Read your favorite book. Then use
your imagination to write a new ending
for the book. Remember to use lots of
descriptive words (adjectives) in your

School Improvement plan(SIP) in action
This year our school improvement plan is focusing on four academic areas.
Each month you will see items in this chart that show activities we are using to
achieve this goal.
Document and implement reading
comprehension strategies.
During Guided Reading,
students will not only be
answering questions, but
coming up with their own
questions to ask each other.
Questioning and predicting
is a great way to foster
comprehension!
Math Investigations Units
We are continuing to learn
our math facts with lots of
card and dice games.
Students enjoy these
motivating games with
buddies as they learn in a
fun way. Thank you for
practicing some of these
games at home!
Actively engage students.
Did you know we play music
in the classroom? Many
teachers are using a variety
of chosen songs to signal
different activities. The
students know what they
should be doing without
saying a word!
6-Traits Writing
We have started discussing
what makes a good
beginning of a story and
looking at examples. We are
trying to have our stories
start out with a “bang!” and
make the reader very
interested in reading more.
