Spiritual
Sickness
(1 Cor 11:30) “For this cause
many are weak and sick among
you, and many sleep.”
Spiritual Hypochondria
• Think they can’t do anything for the Lord
• One – Talent Man
– (Matt 25:25) “And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in
the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.”
• The Spies
– (Num 13:31) “But the men that went up with him said, We be
not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than
we.”
• All things are possible with God
– (Mark 9:23) “If thou canst believe, all things are
possible to him that believeth.”
– (Rom 8:3) “What shall we then say to these things? If
God be for us, who can be against us?”
Spiritual Heart Disease
• Evil conduct comes from a diseased heart
– (Matt 15:19-20) “For out of the heart proceed
evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness,
blasphemies: These are the things which
defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands
defileth not a man.”
Spiritual Heart Disease
• “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out
of it are the issues of life.” (Prov 4:23)
– Your life is based on the condition of your
spiritual heart
– Must take care of our hearts
Spiritual Heart Workout
• (1 Tim 4:7-8) “But refuse profane and old
wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather
unto godliness. For bodily exercise
profiteth little: but godliness is profitable
unto all things, having promise of the life
that now is, and of that which is to come.”
– How do we exercise ourselves unto godliness?
Spiritual Heart Workout
• Word of God – Works out the heart
– (Heb 4:12) “For the word of God is quick, and
powerful, and sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder
of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts
and intents of the heart.”
Result of not Working out our
Spiritual Heart!
• (Heb 4:7) “…Today if ye will hear his
voice, harden not your hearts.”
– If we reject his word, not exercised, then our
hearts will become harden.
– Spiritual Heart failure
Spiritual Farsightedness
• Some can see big and distant things in the
Lord’s work but cannot see the little things close
by.
– Good at spreading a feast
– Not Good at giving a cup of water
• (Matt 10:42) “And whosoever shall give to drink
unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water
only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto
you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.”
Spiritual Delusions of Grandeur
• (Prov 6:16-19) “These six things doth the LORD
hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A
proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed
innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked
imaginations, feet that be swift in running to
mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and
he that soweth discord among brethren.”
• All of these abominable acts could be done in
the name of putting oneself up higher than the
rest.
Spiritual Delusions of Grandeur
• Pride will cause us to Fail
– (Prov 16:18) “Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
– (Prov 11:2) “When pride cometh, then cometh
shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.”
– Pride will cause us to think we need no one
including God!
Spiritual Delusions of Grandeur
• We must put off Pride
– (Matt 18:4) “Whosoever therefore shall humble
himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the
kingdom of heaven.”
– (Col 3:12-13) “Put on therefore, as the elect of God,
holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness,
humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if
any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ
forgave you, so also do ye.”
– (1 Peter 5:5) “Likewise, ye younger, submit
yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject
one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God
resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
Spiritual Chills
• Spiritually brought on by sin
– (Matt 24:12) “And because iniquity shall
abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
Spiritual Fever
• Spiritually a hot temper
– (James 1:19-20) “Wherefore, my beloved
brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow
to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man
worketh not the righteousness of God.”
– Wrath should have no part in our lives
Spiritual Fever
• Anger is an emotion
– Not a sin to be angry
– Sin to let anger have it’s way in wrath
• (Eph 4:26-27) “Be ye angry, and sin not:
let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Neither give place to the devil.”
Spiritual Fever
• Christ was angry yet he didn’t sin
– (Mark 3:1-5) “And he entered again into the
synagogue; and there was a man there which had a
withered hand. And they watched him, whether he
would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might
accuse him. And he saith unto the man which had
the withered hand, Stand forth. And he saith unto
them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or
to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their
peace. And when he had looked round about on
them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of
their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth
thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was
restored whole as the other.
Spiritual Fever
• Anger will motivate
– Right
• Cause us to take action against things that are
wrong, like Jesus did.
• Words and actions will be used in love
• God’s word will not be violated by righteous anger
– Wrong
• Precipitates wrong words or actions.
• Causes resentment, wrath, malice
• God’s word will be violated by spiritual fever
Spiritual Atrophy
• Wasting away of any part of the body;
– Lack of growth from want of nourishment
• The Body of Christ is the Church
– (Eph 1:22-23) “And hath put all things under
his feet, and gave him to be the head over all
things to the church, Which is his body, the
fulness of him that filleth all in all.”
Spiritual Atrophy
• We are members of this Body
– (Eph 5:29-30) “For no man ever yet hated his
own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it,
even as the Lord the church: For we are
members of his body, of his flesh, and of his
bones.”
• The Lord loves his Body and gives us nourishment
– He can’t force feed us, however.
Spiritual Atrophy
• Our nourishment
– His Word
• (1 Pet 2:2) “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the
word, that ye may grow thereby:”
• Always been a serious problem in the church
even in the days of the Apostles – nothing new
– (1 Cor 3:1-2) “And I, brethren, could not speak unto
you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto
babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with
meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither
yet now are ye able.”
Spiritual Poison Ivy
• (2 Tim 4:3-4) “For the time will come when
they will not endure sound doctrine; but
after their own lusts shall they heap to
themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from
the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
• (2 Tim 4:2) “Preach the word; be instant in
season, out of season; reprove, rebuke,
exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
Sleeping Sickness
• Many are afflicted with this sickness
• (1 Thess 5:6) “Therefore let us not sleep
as do others; but let us watch and be
sober.”
• (Eph 5:14) “Wherefore he saith, Awake
thou that sleepest, and arise from the
dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
Sleeping Sickness
• Those in sin are asleep spiritually
• They are dead in sin.
– (Eph 2:1) “And you hath he quickened who
were dead in trespasses, and sins.”
• Death means separation
– Spiritual death (Isaiah 59:2) “But your
iniquities have separated between you and
your God, and your sins have hid his face
from you, that he will not hear.”
Sleeping Sickness
• Cure this disease with Jesus Christ!
– With faith in his word and repentance one can be
buried with him in water to be raised up in a newness
of life
– (Rom 6:3-4) “Know ye not, that so many of us as
were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his
death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism
into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.”
Spiritual Hydrophobia
• Fear of Water
– Pharisees and Lawyers had it
• (Luke 7:30) “But the Pharisees and lawyers
rejected the counsel of God against themselves,
being not baptized of him.”
– Those that are afflicted with this sickness can
never enjoy the remission of sins or come into
Christ. (Acts 2:38)
