Revision Techniques,
timetables, learning styles

Aims:
• To help you understand how different learning
styles can affect how you learn.
• Revision techniques to help you support your
child.
• How to construct a revision timetable.
Learning Styles
• Visual Audio
Kinaesthetic
• Do you recognise your
child’s learning style?
Visual Learner Characteristics
Visual learners are those who learn
through seeing things.
• Is good at spelling.
• Likes colors & fashion.
• Dreams in colour.
• Understands/likes charts, diagrams.
• Is good with sign language.
Visual Learners Can use the
following to succeed:
• visual materials such as pictures, charts, maps,
graphs, etc.
• use colour to highlight important points in text
• Illustrate ideas as a picture or mind map before
writing them down
• use multi-media (e.g. computers, videos, and
filmstrips)
• study in a quiet place away from verbal disturbances
• visualize information as a picture to aid memorization
Auditory Learner Characteristics
• Auditory learners are those who learn best
through hearing things.
•

Likes to read to self out loud.
•
Is good at explaining.
•
Remembers names.
•
Notices sound effects in movies.
•
Enjoys music.
•
Is good at grammar and foreign language.
•
Follows spoken directions well.
•
Can't keep quiet for long periods.
•
Enjoys acting, being on stage.
Auditory Learners Can use the following
to help revision:
• Use word association to remember facts and
lines.
• Watch videos.
• Repeat facts with eyes closed.
• Participate in group discussions.
• Use audiotapes for language practice.
• Tape notes after writing them.
Kinesthetic Learner Characteristics

Kinesthetic learners are those who learn through experiencing/doing
things.
•
Is good at sports.
•
Can't sit still for long.
•
Are not great at spelling.
•
Does not have great handwriting.
•
Studies with loud music on.
•
Likes adventure books, movies.
•
Likes role playing.
•
Likes to take lots of breaks when studying.
•
Builds models.
Kinesthetic Learners Can use the
following to help revision:
• take frequent study breaks
• move around to learn new things (e.g. read
while on an exercise bike, mold a piece of clay
to learn a new concept)
• work at a standing position
• chew gum while studying
• use bright colors to highlight reading material
• dress up work space with posters
• listen to music while studying
How would you?
• Revise how to calculate a percentage? If you
were an auditory learner?
• Revise the periodic table if you were a visual
learner?
• Revise the features of a speech if you were a
kinestetic learner?

• Getting organise by:
• Clearing a space, getting the right equipment;
• Check you have the right materials to revise
from.
• Create an visual overview of your subject to
revise (see your teachers for help eg Maths)
Making a Revision Timetable
What to fill it in with…

Be realistic.
Plan regular breaks
Break subjects into smaller topics
Make sure you cover all topics
Include important dates: Coursework deadlines;
after school activities etc.
And lastly…
• Look after yourself – eat well and get plenty of
sleep.
• Work when you feel most alert – even if it is late
at night!
• Plan relaxation time.
• Ask for help – very very very important – so
many want to!!
• Believe in yourself, be positive and do your best.
