Orientation Night
First Grade
Grades
The First Graders do receive number/letter
grades for the first time this year.
READING
In first grade, we use a balanced approach
to literacy.
Our Reading Workshop includes the
following components:
Read Aloud
Shared Reading
Guided Reading
Independent Reading
MINIMUM
READING LEVELS
End of the first grading period: D
End of the second grading period: F
End of the third grading period: H
End of the fourth grading period: J
WRITING
Balanced literacy includes Writer’s Workshop.
First Graders will learn the writing process.
Our writing program consists of the following
components:
Guided Writing
Independent Writing
Shared Writing
WORD STUDY
A component of writing where we make words
in class to apply to our daily writing.
Each grading period we will have a district
WORD STUDY Test that is part of the Language
Writing grade.
We will send home the word families we are
working on for each grading pd. *clear sleeve*

MATH
Our goal for first graders is to help
students develop numeracy skills,
problem solving strategies, and make
connections to real-world experiences
to be able to learn new topics and
solve unfamiliar problems.

Our Guided Math program includes the

Whole group instruction
Small group instruction
Math Rotations
EVERYDAY

PIRATE binder
Red Take-Home/Communication Folder
*please remind your child to give any
important notes to their teacher*
Healthy/Dry Snack

Change of Clothes in a Ziploc Bag
HOMEWORK
Homework will consist of:
Math Assignment
Daily Guided Reading Books
Homework Menu
During the year there will be
other projects that will be
assigned for a grade.
HOMEWORK
Homework goes home on Mondays and is
due Friday.
If homework has not been turned in by
Friday morning it may result in a “mark”
on their Communication Folder.
Homework turned into the front office will
not be seen by us until the afternoon due
to our schedule.
RED TAKE – HOME
COMMUNICATION FOLDER
This is a daily communication between the
teacher and the parents.
Important Notes/Handouts from the school and
teachers will go home in this Communication
Folder.
Please sign the Expectation/Behavior Card daily.
There is a Behavior Celebration at the end of each
grading period for students that receive less than
5 marks.
EXPECTATION CARDS
*see back of expectation card*
Please note: A total of 10 - 15 marks on the student’s
Expectation Card will equal an “N” under “Disciplines Self”
on the report card.
A total of 16 or more marks on the student’s Expectation
Card will equal a “U” under “Disciplines Self” on the report
card.
Loss of the expectation card once a grading period will
equal an “N” in organizational skills and loss of the card
twice will equal a “U” in organizational skills.
Office referrals will result in an N (at minimum) in the
Disciplines Self category on the report card and loss of
grading period behavior award.

Transportation
How is your child getting
home?
RJWE transportation policy:
We will ONLY take a transportation changes in
writing from the parent. This can be done 1 of 3
ways:
1.) Note from parent through the student/backpack
2.) Note dropped off at front office or form filled
out at the front office
3.) Note faxed from parent w/ copy of parent
drivers license. The fax number is (281) 644-1875.

Communication Folder, Lanyards, ID Plastic
Covers, 1” binder and Backpack Tag
Only the student’s ID should be on the
lanyard.
LUNCH
Please make sure your child’s name is on
his/her lunch kit.
If your child is planning on buying lunch at
all this year, you can set up an account
online with Mealpay Plus.
Parents, you are welcome to
eat lunch with your child.
Early Dismissal Lunch is 1 hour before
the original time for your child’s class.
Snack Time
Students may bring a healthy,
non-messy, dry snack from home to eat
while they are working. Students are
allowed to have non-colored water
during class time.
Examples of healthy snacks are:
pretzels
Goldfish crackers
crackers
granola bars
Our Specials Time is 1:45-2:35.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Birthdays are very special days.
We will celebrate birthdays during our
recess time.
First grade requires birthday treats to be
mini-cupcakes or cookies for the class due
to some classes having recess before lunch.
Also, please provide only store bought
birthday treats.
BIRTHDAYS
By law students are not allowed to hand
out birthday invitations at school.
Non-academic paperwork cannot go
home through a child’s communication
folder. All paperwork has to be
approved by our campus administration
and/or district personnel.

teamwork between student, teacher, and
parent. Your support at home will positively
