Algebra I
Unit 2 Lesson 3
Objectives
• SWBAT set up and solve equations given word problems.
• SWBAT rearrange literal equations and formulas in terms of a specific
solution.
Linear Equations
What is a Linear Equation?
A linear an equation between two variables that gives a straight line
when plotted on a graph. A linear equation is special because:
• It has one or two variables.
• No variable in a linear equation is raised to a power greater than 1
• If you plot the pairs of values that make the linear equation true, all
of the points for any one equation will form a straight line
Linear Equations and Relationships
• A linear equation with two variables describes a relationship in which the
value of one of the variables depends on the value of the other variable.
Where x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable.
Is This a Linear Equation?
Yes-Raise Open Hand
No-Raise Closed Fist
Now how do we go about turning words into an equation so that we can
solve it?
How to Set-Up Solve
•
•
•
•
•
•
Step 1. What do we need to know? Let x represent the unknown variable
Step 2. Set up the equation
Step 3. Use Inverse PEMDAS and Inverse Operations in order to isolate variable
Step 4: Is this a reasonable solution? Why or Why not?
Step 5: Label solution
Step 6: Check your answer using substitution.

Do Now – Write the linear equation and solve
for the questions below
• Two containers, Container A and container B are cracked and are dripping
water. Container A has 800 ml of water, and is leaking at a rate of 6 ml per
minute. Container B has 1000 ml, and is leaking at a rate of 10 ml per
minute. How many minutes, m, will it take for the two containers to have
the same amount of water? How much water will be inside of the
containers?
Linear Equations
• The cost to purchase a song from iTunes is $1 per song. To purchase a song
from Billboard, you must be a member. The Billboard membership fee is
$10. In addition, each purchased song costs $0.50. How many downloaded
songs, d, must be purchased for the monthly price of Billboard to be the
same as iTunes? How many songs would you have downloaded?
Linear Equations
• A ten inch candle and a twenty-five inch candle are lit at 6pm. The 10 inch
candle burns 0.5 inches every hour. The 25 inch candle burns two inches
every hour. At what time will the two candles be the same height? How tall
will the candles be? Let h represent the number of hours.
Literal Equations
What is a literal equation?
• A literal equation is an equation that contains more
than one variable.
• When you solve a literal equation, you are rearranging
the equation to isolate a variable.
• For Example:
• XY = 6Z Solve for Y
• 6a +8c =d Solve for d
Guided Practice
1.
2.
3.
4.
6.
gh = m for g
3x - 6y = 17 for x.
ax + b = c for x
ab + cd = g for c
ab + cd = g for a
You Try!
1.
P= IRT
for T
2.
A= 2(L + W)
3.
y= 5x - 6 for x
4.
2x +3y = 8 for y
for W
Applications of Literal Equations
The area A of a triangle is given by the formula
A = ½bh where b is the base and h is the height.
a. Solve the formula for the height h.
b.
h
b
Use formula from a. to find
the height of the triangle
shown, which has a base of
5cm and an area of 50cm.
You are visiting a foreign country over the
weekend. A local website tells you that the
weather will be 30⁰C on Saturday and
Sunday.
•Should you pack a winter coat or should you
pack a bathing suit for your trip?
The formula for Celsius is:
