Solving One-Step
Equations
In
Algebra County
The equal sign is like
a wall between the
two sides of
the equation.
The first step in solving is to
simplify the expression on each
side.
5(x  2) = 3(x  12)
5x  10  3x  36
x = {2}
We solve equations by getting a single variable
on one side and everything else on the other
side.
An
example
x- 2= - 5
Choose the
variable you
want to keep.
Get rid of
the -2.
x- 2= - 5
The only way
to get across the wall
(the equal sign)
is to use the
inverse property.
x- 2= - 5
The inverse
is the
opposite.
x- 2= - 5
+2
+2
x = {- 3}
To get rid of the -2 legally, we have
to add 2 to BOTH sides.
Another
example
3x = - 12
3
3
x = {- 4}
The inverse (or opposite) of
multiplication is division.
A third
example
4c  2c  6
2c  6
2
2
c  3
Divide both sides by 2.
Add like terms on the left side.
They have
several
different
variables.

x = {- b - 2c}
Final
Answer
Review
• Simplify each side
• Do the inverse operation to isolate
the variable (get a variable by itself).
Do it to both sides.
• Write the final answer in braces.
