Funda-Mental?
(Warm-Up)
Solve the following problem:
Is there a way you could have solved the problem using
mental math? Explain.
Yes, multiplication and division are inverse
operations and they “undo” each other.
Recall the algorithm we
discovered for dividing fractions
The division sign
becomes a
multiplication sign.
Now we multiply by the
reciprocal.
Let’s try this one
Before we start we convert
the mixed number to an
improper fraction.
Multiply the
denominator and the
whole number.
Add the numerator to
the product of the
whole number and
the denominator.
The denominator
remains the same.
4x1=4
4 +3 = 7
Now we can use the algorithm to solve the
problem.
We use the inverse of
division, which is
multiplication.
Now we use the
reciprocal.
We can simplify
and multiply
horizontally

Try this one with a partner
Sylvester has a roll of cookie dough that is
inches long. He slices each cookie to
be of an inch wide. How many cookies
can he make from the roll of dough?
Cookies
From the roll of cookie dough
you can make 22 cookies the
same width and the remaining
cookie will be approximately a
quarter of an inch thick.
