Properties of Real
Numbers
Chapter 1 Section 4
Objective

Students will identify and use properties of
real numbers.
Equivalent Expressions

Expressions that have the same value for
all values of the variable(s).
Properties
1.

Commutative Properties of + and x
Associative Properties of + and x
Identity Property of + and x
Zero Property of x
Multiplicative Property of -1
Commutative Property

Commute means to move
X+3=3+x
or
X (3) = 3(x)
Associative Property

Associate means to be grouped with
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Or
(a • b) • c = a • (b • c)
Identity Property

The identity will not be changed
a+0=a
Or
a•1=a
Zero Property of Multiplication

Anything multiplied by 0 is 0.
a•0=0
Multiplication Property of -1

Multiplying by -1 will always give you the
opposite of the original quantity.
a • -1 = -a

Try the “Got It” problems for those
examples.

It’s raining outside, so if I walk outside
I will get wet.
Counterexample

An example showing that a statement is
