Objectives
8.6 Factoring x2 + bx + c
The students will be able to factor a
polynomial that has a coefficient of one by
identifying the structure and patterns of
each polynomial and working to break it
down into factors.
Multiply:
(x + 2)(x + 3)
x2 + 5x + 6
Where did the x2 come from?
Where did the x term come from?
Where did the constant come from?
What two operations did we use in this process?
How do I factor x2 + bx + c ?
STEPS
• Look for a GCF!
• Find two numbers that MULTIPLY to give you
“c”…the last term!
• Find two numbers that ADD/SUBTRACT to give
you “b”…the middle term!
• Record your results in the “X”.
• Set up your parenthesis which each factor.
x2 + 7x + 10
x2 + 12x + 27
x2 + 12x + 32
2x2 – 12x + 16
3x2 – 36x + 96
x2 – 2x – 24
x2 + 7x – 8
5x2 – 30x – 135
How to Solve by Factoring
• Move all of the terms to one side of the
equation, leaving the other side as 0.
• Factor the side with all of the terms.
• Use the zero product property.
What do you think the zero product
property says?
If a • b = 0,
Then…
Solve:
x2 + 17x + 30 = 0
Solve:
x2 + 48 = 19x
Solve:
x2 + 10x = 200
Solve:
x2 – 10x – 200 = 0
Solve:
x2 – 45x + 450 = 0
