Living with the
New Arts
Assessments
(and kinda enjoying it)
Washington State Arts
Program Goal:
All 296 school districts will
provide comprehensive,
sequential, standardsbased K-12 arts programs
in dance, music, theatre,
and the visual arts for
ALL students.
“What is a CBPA anyway?”
• A CLASSROOM
PERFORMANCEBASED ASSESSMENT
• Scored by the teacher
(or a group of teachers)
• Provide awareness of
individual students
meeting standard on
what they need to be
able to do (not just
know) in the arts
It is a summative assessment (but
can be used as a formative
assessment)
What do the Arts
CBPAs look like?
Anaholistic CLASSROOMBASED ASSESSMENTS
•Analytical
•Holistic
Notation/Composition
Assessment
• You have 2 - 30 minute sessions to write
an 8 measure melody that uses standard
music notation. The melody must begin
on middle “C” and end on middle “C”. The
melody must use a mixture of quarter
notes, half notes, and whole notes.
• The melody is to be written on the music
manuscript paper provided by your
teacher.
School News Music
Theme
• The principal of your school has announced that a new
television news show will be started in the school. The
news show will be broadcast throughout the school each
morning to every classroom. You have been asked to
write a musical “theme” that will be played at the
beginning and end of the show.
• Your “theme” needs to be at least 15 seconds in length
and can be written in standard or modified notation.
• If you piece is selected to be used for the show, it will be
orchestrated by the music teacher for any group of five
instruments.
• When you complete your melody, you will need to write
the names of the five instruments you would like to use
in your musical composition.

Now what do you do?”

or at the ESD level
• Teachers will be trained in scoring based
on a set of RUBRIC developed by the
OSPI AALT team
• Responses will be scored on a 4,3,2,1,0
scale
• Districts will be required to report back to
the state
