Remainders
I am learning to solve division problems that have remainders.
An amount left over that can’t be shared out
evenly.
There are 18 counters which need to be shared between 4 groups.
How many counters should be placed in each group? 18 ÷ 4 = ?
Below are 4 groups.
I know 4 X 4 = 16 so I’m going to share this amount first.
I’ve shared out 16 which means I have 2 left over.
So 18 ÷ 4 = 4 r2
The ‘r’ stands for
remainders
If we had 2 more counters we would have enough to give one more
counter to each group. We have half as much as we need.
So we can also record this answer as 4 ½ or 4.5
There are 26 counters which need to be shared between 8 groups.
How many counters should be placed in each group? 26 ÷ 8 = ?
Below are 8 groups.
I know 8 X 3 = 24 so I’m going to share this amount first.
I’ve shared out 24 which means I have 2 left over.
So 26 ÷ 8 = 3 r2
If we had 8 counters we would have enough to give one more counter
to each group but we only have 2. We have 2/8 of what we need.
2/8 is the same as ¼
So we can also record this answer as 3 ¼ or 3.25

There are 19 sweets which must be shared between 9 groups. How
many sweets should be placed in each group?
19 ÷ 9 = ?
Below are 9 groups.
I know 9 X 2 = 18 so I’m going to share this amount first.
I’ve shared out 18 which means I have 1 left over.
So 19 ÷ 9 = 2 r1
If we had 9 sweets we would have enough to give one more sweet to
each group but we only have 1. We have 1/9 of what we need.
0.11
On a calculator type in 1 ÷ 9 = ……….
So we can also record this answer as 2 and 1/9 or 2.11
