X & Y INTERCEPTS
WHAT DOES INTERCEPT MEAN?
In football:
The path of the defender crosses the path of the
thrown football.
In math:
What are the x- and y-intercepts?
WHAT ARE THE X- AND Y-INTERCEPTS?
The x-intercept is where the
graph crosses the x-axis.
The y-coordinate is always 0.
The y-intercept is where the
graph crosses the y-axis.
The x-coordinate is always 0.
FINDING INTERCEPTS

To find the x-intercept, substitute in 0 for y and
solve for x
2x+y=6

To find the y-intercept, substitute in 0 for x and
solve for y
2x+y=6
USING INTERCEPTS TO GRAPH A LINE

Graph the line with an x-intercept of 3 and a
y-intercept of 6.
The x-intercept is 3, so we have the point (3, 0)
The y-intercept is 6, so we have the point (0, 6)

USING INTERCEPTS TO GRAPH A LINE

Graph the line with an x-intercept of and a
y-intercept of 6.
The x-intercept is 3, so we have the point (3, 0)
The y-intercept is 6, so we have the point (0, 6)
YOUR TURN!
Find the x- and y-intercepts of the equation.
Then graph the line using the intercepts.

In order to prepare for an upcoming snow storm,
Jane went to rent some movies and video games. Movies
cost $4 each to rent, and video games cost $2 each. Jane
spent $20 renting movies and games. The equation that
represents x number of movies, and y number of video
games is 4x+2y=20.
1. What are the x- and y-intercepts?
2.
Graph the line using the intercepts.
3.
What do the x- and y-intercepts represent for this
problem?
