DOTTED NOTES are notes to lean on.
I like to think of dotted notes as always being on
their way somewhere. The dotted notes must feel
like they are leaning forward. Most inexperienced
musicians lay back on dotted notes causing a lazy,
sagging sound. Exciting performances are enhanced
by the dotted notes leaning forward. They could
most likely have a slight crescendo on them to push
them though to the next notes (phrase). When they
are given a slight crescendo they become alive.
Jim Matthews says:
Therefore, think of the dot like this . . .

Always moving forward
Make the dotted notes LEAN forward
Make the dotted notes JUMP forward.
Help dotted notes lean forward
by using crescendo

Does the dot rule also apply to rests?
Yes it does. The only difference is one represents
sound (note) while the other represents silence (rest).
