Main Idea
Example 1: Divide Money
Example 2: Estimate with Decimals
Example 3: Greater Numbers
• I will estimate quotients of decimals and greater
numbers.
Divide Money
Kaitlyn bought 3 paperback books of equal
price for a total of $14.97. About how much did
each book cost?
$14.97 ÷ 3
$15 ÷ 3
$15 ÷ 3 = $5
Change $14.97 to $15 because
15 and 3 are compatible numbers.
Divide mentally.
Answer: So, $14.97 ÷ 3 is about $5. Each book cost
about $5.
Taylor bought 4 notebooks for $21.33. About how
much did each notebook cost?
A. $4
B. $5

Estimate with Decimals
The total weight of 8 pumpkins was 22.9 pounds.
If each pumpkin weighs about the same amount,
about how much does each pumpkin weigh?
22.9 ÷ 8
24 ÷ 8
Change 22.9 to 24 because
24 and 8 are compatible numbers.
24 ÷ 8 = 3
Divide mentally.
Answer: So, 22.9 ÷ 8 is about 3. Each pumpkin weighs
about 3 pounds.
The total weight of 6 bags of oranges is 31.2 pounds.
If each bag weighs about the same amount, about
how much does each bag weigh?
A. 5 lb
B. 6 lb
C. 7 lb
D. 8 lb

Greater Numbers
The roundtrip distance from City A to City B is
6,060 air miles. How many roundtrips from City A
to City B would you have to take to travel 1 million
air miles?
You want to find how many groups of 6,060 are in
1,000,000. So, divide 1,000,000 by 6,060.
Estimate 1,000,000 ÷ 5,000 = 200

Check for Reasonableness
Compare 165 to the estimate.
When you use a calculator, the remainder is expressed
as a decimal. It would take 165 whole roundtrips and
part of another roundtrip to travel 1,000,000 air miles.
Answer: So, you would travel 1 million air miles on
your 166th roundtrip.
A Web site gets 7,689 visitors a day. How many days
will it take to get 1,000,000 visitors? Use a calculator
to find 1,000,000 ÷ 7,689.
A. 137
B. 135
C. 131

Interpret the Remainder
(over Lesson 4–6)
Solve. Explain how you interpreted the remainder.
Each oatmeal raisin cookie at a bakery is made with
8 raisins. How many cookies can be made with
250 raisins?
A. 31 cookies; the remainder 2 is the
number of raisins left over.
