Example 1
The sum of two numbers is 52. The second number is 2 less than twice
the first. What are the two numbers?
Example 2
The student council at Bloomington High School is raising money by
selling hot apple cider and hot chocolate at this week's games. They
sold 15 apple ciders and 68 hot chocolates at the football game, raising
a total of $181. They raised $141 at the soccer game by selling 15 apple
ciders and 48 hot chocolates. How much is the student council selling
each drink for?
Example 3
A group of friends are at a baseball game and are purchasing souvenirs.
Rita purchased 3 t-shirts and 5 baseball caps, spending a total of $213.
Vincent purchased 2 t-shirts and 1 baseball cap, which cost him a total
of $79. Assuming that all of the t-shirts and all of the caps are the same
price, what is the price of each?
Example 4
A boat traveled 210 miles downstream. The trip downstream took 10
hours. The trip back took 70 hours. What is the speed of the boat in still
water? What is the speed of the current?
