Subtraction
REGROUPING!!!
When you subtract you always begin with the ones place and
move left!

Start here!
Step 1: Ask yourself “can I subtract
this?” if you can’t you need to regroup.
Step 2: Time to regroup! ALWAYS
take from your neighbor first!
Subtraction with regrouping
Take 1 and give 10!!!
We have to regroup when we cannot subtract the
numbers in a specific place (hint- if the top number is
SMALLER than the bottom you have to regroup).

-236
Sometimes you have to regroup more
than one time! Always follow these
steps when you regroup:
Yikes I can’t
subtract
that!
This means the neighbor goes down by
1 and you add a tens place to the
number that you can’t subtract.
Step 3: REPEAT!! Move to the next
place and do steps 1 and 2 over again!!
When you regroup you are taking 1 from the neighbor
and giving 10 to the place you cannot subtract.
Estimation and Subtraction

When do I estimate?

Take 1 from
the tens place
and give 10 to
the ones place
Then you stop and subtract the ones place.
Now it is time to subtract the tens place- check it to
see if you can!!!!

Can I subtract
the tens
place….YES!!
No regrouping
this time!
In subtraction word problems there is
a word that tells you when to estimate
(round). That word is ABOUT.
Estimating is suppose to make it faster
for you to solve the problem.
The first thing you have to do is round
both numbers to the largest place.
Then you subtract the two numbers
that you rounded.
