4.5 Writing Point Slope Equations to Fit data
State Standards: C1. Apply properties of operations and the real number system and
justify when they hold for a set of numbers.A2. Generalize and explain patterns and
sequences in order to find the next term and the nth term.
B3. Identify and classify functions as linear or nonlinear, and contrast their
properties using tables, graphs or equations.J15. Describe and interpret rates of
change from graphical and numerical data.
Objective: Complete the questions in the form below. If you do not complete
these in class, they will become homework. Graded out of 20 points. State

The form y=y1+b(x-x1) of a linear equation in
which (x1,y1) is a point on the line an B is the
slope.
Find the equation of the line that passes through
the points (1,2) and (3,4)
Point slope equation: y=y1+b(X-X1)
Find The slope:
Y=2+2/2(x-1)
Graph the linear equation on your calculator and
name the x - intercept. Make a conjecture about the
x – intercept of any equation in the form y = b ( x x1).
Problems:
1.) y = 2 (x – 3)
2.) y = 1/3 (x – 4 )
3.) y = -1.5 ( x – 6 )
1.) 2
2.) 1/3
3.) – 1.5

Write an equation in point slope form that models
Alex’s data.
Y-y1=m(x-x1 )
Y-55.0=12/5.5(x-14.5)
Find the equation of the line that passes
through the points (79,47) and (67,30)
(USE THE SECOND POINT AS THE POINT IN
THE POINT SLOPE FORM)
Y-y1=m(x-x1)
Y-30=-17/-12(x-67)
