PROBLEM OF THE DAY
Judy climbed the Rock of Gibraltar to an elevation of 1200 feet above sea level.
The maximum depth of the Strait of Gibraltar is more than 1200 feet below sea
level. Represent these two situations using numbers.
Highlight Clue Words.
These numbers can be written as Integers.
Let’s take a closer look at integers.
VOCABULARY ALERT
Integers – the set of whole numbers and their opposites.
Integers are positive numbers, negative numbers or zero.
I ...,3,2,1,0,1,2,3,...
The set of integers contains:
1. The set of counting numbers, {1, 2, 3, 4, …}
2. The set of whole numbers, {0, 1, 2, 3, …}
3. The set of opposites of whole numbers, {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0}
Let’s take a look back at the Problem of the Day.
Judy climbed the Rock of Gibraltar to an elevation of 1200 feet above sea level.
The maximum depth of the Strait of Gibraltar is more than 1200 feet below sea
level. Represent these two situations using numbers.
The opposite of an integer is the integer that is the same
distance from 0 on a number line but is located on the
opposite side of 0.
Negative integers
are less than 0.
Positive integers
are greater than 0.
Zero is neither
positive nor negative.
OPPOSITES
To graph an integer on a number line, draw a dot to locate
the point on the number line that corresponds to the
integer.
For each lettered point, on the number line
below, name the integer and its opposite.
A
B
C
D
Point A is at -7.
(7)
This is read as “the
opposite of negative
seven.”
Write an integer for each situation.
$10 earned
3 below zero
A loss of 5 points
An increase of 10 yd
VOCABULARY ALERT
The Absolute Value of an integer is its distance from zero
on a number line.
5 units from 0
5
Read as the absolute
value of negative five.
5 units from 0
5
Read as the absolute
value of positive five.
Since distance cannot be negative, the absolute value of a
number is always positive!
