HOW TO DO
OPERATIONS IN
SCIENTIFIC
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
NOTATION
USING YOUR E, Exp, or EE
KEY IN YOUR CALCULATOR
Let’s try a few problems:
3.24x10-3 X 1.66x104
3.24 EE-3 X 1.66 EE 4 =
3.24 Exp-3 X 1.66Exp4=
3.24E-3 X 1.66 E4=
53.784
Multiplying in Scientific
Notation
Example: 3.24x10-3 X 1.66x104
1. Multiply the Bases: (Numbers in front of the multiplication
sign):
3.24 X 1.66
=5.3784
2. Add the exponents: (-3) + (4) = 1
This “one” becomes the exponent = 101 = 10
(1 is understood)
3. Now: 5.3784 X 101= 53.784
Let’s try one more, WITHOUT
A CALCULATOR…
6.022 X1023 x 2.55 X102
1. Multiply the bases:
6.022X2.55=
15.35
2. Add the exponents:
23+2= 25
Answer: 15.35X1025
3. Move the decimal point to the left one space, to have
only one whole number. If I move one space to the left,
my exponent increase in one
Best answer: 1.535X1026
Dividing in Scientific Notation
Example: 3.24x10-3
1.66x104
1. Divide the Bases: (Number in front of the multiplication sign):
2. Subtract the exponents:
3.24
1.66
=1.95
(-3) -(4) = -7
This “negative 7” becomes the exponent =10-7
3. Our answer is:
1.95 X 10-7
